U's hit City for three
Oxford secured a valuable three points as they put three past
Bristol City, Joey Beauchamp
grabbing a brace and Derek Lilley adding the third.
Oxford went into the half time interval with a two goal advantage
in this Manor Ground clash, both
strikes ones that Bristol City will not want to include on their
end of season video.
Oxford opened the scoring on seven minutes. Gerard Lavin's backpass
was tricky for keeper
Steve Phillips. Phillips took the ball past Joey Beauchamp,
but was dispossessed by Derek
Lilley. Lilley laid the ball off to Beauchamp, who enjoyed the
simplest of chances to give Oxford
the lead as he finished from close range.
And Oxford made it two just before the break. Steve Anthrobus'
flick-on found Matt Murphy.
Murphy got the ball tangled under his feet somewhat, but still
had time to fire a shot in. That effort
was parried by Phillips, the ball falling to Beauchamp, who
made no mistake with the finish for
his second goal of the game.
In between times Bristol City could have been on the scoresheet
themselves, but were denied on
three occasions by the legs of U's keeper Paul Lundin.
He blocked a Gooding effort, before producing a similar save
to deny Jones. That save though
saw the ball rebound into play. Carl Hutchings looked to take
advantage with a scorching strike,
but once more Lundin made an excellent save with his legs to
deny Bristol City.
The second half saw Oxford create further chances as Phillips
saved from Joey Beauchamp,
while Steve Anthrobus fired wide of the target.
And Oxford made it three just past the hour mark. Phillips got
a hand to a Jamie Cook header, but
the ball fell to Derek Lilley, his shot finding the back of
the net.
As for City, their best chance of the second period fell to
Greg Goodridge, but he saw his effort
cleared off the line by Rob Folland.
It finished 3-0 to the U's, a great result for Malcolm Shotton's
men, and one that sees Oxford in
15th place in the table on 11 points.
