Wembley hopes dashed
Goals from Derek Bryan and Andy Scott consigned The U's to a
2-0 defeat at Brentford in the
Southern section quarter-final of the AWS.
Bees' substitute Bryan bravely headed home from a corner on
62 minutes to open the scoring,
only to be stretched off after colliding with keeper Paul Lundin
for his troubles.
Andy Scott wrapped things up for the home side deep into stoppage
time, capitalising on Scott
Partridge's through-ball.

The Bees progressed through to the Area Semi Final of the Auto Windscreens
Shield this evening,
but at a cost.
Their first goal, which came in the 62nd minute, was scored by Derek
Bryan. But as he got his foot
to the ball he collided with United keeper Paul Lundin and in doing
so incurred what can only be
described at this stage as a serious knee injury. Play was held up
for five minutes, with referee
Paul Danson immediately running across to the Bees bench to tell them
of the severity of the
injury. He received on the field treatment from the Club surgeon and
Match doctor and was
immediately taken to hospital.
The rest of the game pales into insignificance. But in truth the first
half was very poor, although
the Bees were the team who looked likely to progress. The best chance
fell to Andy Scott as early
as the second minute. But having been sent clear he saw the keeper
smother his shot inside the
area.
The second half saw Derek Bryan replace Steve Jones, ala Bury, and
he livened the Bees up no
end.
The goal followed a corner which was cleared as far as Ijah Anderson.
He played the ball back into
the area and there was Derek Bryan ready to pounce in teh face of Lundin`s
challenge. The ball
trickled over the line, but was greeted by subdued cheers from the
Bees fans realising what had
happened.
Four minutes earlier the Bees had made their second substitution when
Gavin Mahon limped off
to be replaced by Scott Partridge.
Oxford very rarely threatened, and it was the Bees who eventually scored
another.
It came six minutes into the time added on by the ref. Scottie Partridge
jiggled his way between
two opponents and played the perfect through ball for Andy Scott to
run on to and slide past the
keeper into the back of the net for his second goal in two games.
A fairly comfortable victory for the Bees although it`s also fair to
say that they made hard work of
it.
