Nobby's report continues:
Having decided to rest myself in the semi-final (in order to be fit for a
Final appearance!) I was able to relax a little and watch the nail-biter
(sorry Darren, no offence mate!!!!) between Hudds and Colchester in the
other semi. Not knowing much about the Colchester team previously, I was
impressed with what I saw although it was the hosts who took the lead before
the break. Colchester equalised in the second half and, with no further
goals, the game had to be decided on penalties. I think I was as nervous
watching as the poor sods (but very brave souls) taking them and I felt for
every single one of the guys out there. It's always a shame there has to be
a loser from such a good, clean, enjoyable, closely-fought contest.
Nevertheless it was Colchester who booked a place in the Final. Now it was
up to us and Bradford to fight it out for the remaining place.
Not taking an active role in this game, it was a relief to be able to hand
over the official pennant exchanging duties to a team-mate. And so the
battle began in earnest.
Bradford looked a good, strong, fit, physical, side and - despite Porl's
efforts to out-psyche them before the game with talk of Yetis players who
had been done for GBH in their last match - our opponents took a 1-goal lead
into the break. At this point I was locked in secret negotiations with a
Hudds chappy, arranging an impromptu (BUT *OFFICIAL*!!!!) 3rd/4th place
play-off game for the 2 losing semi-finalists. ("My players will really
appreciate such a kind gesture" I thought! "I'll tell them when they're
recovering from this clash!")
After the break Bradford went further in front and, much as we tried, we
couldn't break them down and the game ended in a 2-0 defeat for the brave
but very weary, battle-scarred Yetis. (Pah, we've never lost against
Bradford when *I've* been in the team!!) And so it was time to tell of them
of the little surprise I had been cooking up for them ...
Semi-Final results:
Huddersfield Town 1 Colchester Utd 1
(Colchester won 4-2 on penalties)
Bradford City 2 Leicester City 0
