Comments: I had no idea you were so methodical about your vehicle. Your home page is great...knowing you is to know what that page would contain! However, I was completely stunned to see the detail by which you record every breath of life your car consumes. I'm glad to learn that you know how to work on cars...I used to work on my Mustang ('65) too. The only difference is - it sounds like you know what you're doing.... Thanks for the tour!

It was the 127 Scout to come off the line. My son and I have learned a lot together and now feel we have a real treasure. We don't mud our Scouts, we just cruse town and ride in the country.

Comments I've just recently acquired a 1962 scout 80 4x4. i was wondering if you could help me out? mine has the 152cui 4cyl engine in it with a 3 speed tranny. my questions are: would an electronic ignition be better than the points-set-type distributor i have now? if so, how would i go about the upgrade, and what would i need to do so? also, i have the original oil-bath air cleaner sitting on the one barrel carb. would a more recent air filter set-up be more efficient, if so, how would i do the conversion?

Comments Well Myron, looks as if you are a pretty popular guy. With 11068 sign-ins or did you change that counter. Although I live on the beach, and walk it quite frequently I haven't had the opportunity to try it jet skiing. No I take that back, I'm darn scared to try. I remember the first time I tried to water ski, I couldn't keep the from going up my nose when each time I fell down, or was it when I splashed down. To this day I realy don't remember. I did recently purchased a rubber boat and took it out. One thing I forgot to do through was to get an anchor. Those things draft out pretty far and fast. Great page, took an internet class last fall, just enough to beeeeeeeee dangerous. Later. CB. (-:

Comments Two weeks into a 70 Scout 800A halfcab-one gas tank off(drivers side one missing), about 500 pounds of Alabama red clay up inside the wheel wells (just got that cleaned out today) getting ready to sandblast the inners a little and shoot about two good coats of POR15 and some Chassiscoat black-also have to redo the gas tank. Need to replace the rear axle (some butcher put a pickup rear in it), probably will do both axles with Scout II pieces for easier parts and serviceability. Will keep watching, I'm going thru some of the same stuff you have.

Comments I am a 26y/o fireman in NE Florida. I recently aquired a '66 Scout 800. It is in good shape, runs good, only some surface rust. My wifes grandfather bought it new in Feb. '66, sold it to his son-in-law (my father-in-law) for a dollar sometime in the early eighties, but it still sat in the same garage. And my father-in-law gave it to me a month ago. It was only used to pull the boat to the ramp, drive on the beach, sometimes huting, and occasionally around town. In 32 years, only had 36k put on it. I don't have the time to give it the care it deserves, but I thoroghly enjoy it. I am taking it Turkey hunting this weekend. I will be checking back to see your progress. You have given me some good ideas on future improvements I am finding I will inevitably have to make.

Comments I just spent the last hour or two reading through your documented 800 saga - thanks for the great waste of time! I just bought a '73 Scout II w/ a bad motor for $400 and then found a replacement 345 for $200, throw in a complete power steering conversion for $100 + about $100 for misc. parts, gaskets, and lots of paint and wire cleaning brushes and I have a ok looking Scout w/ an engine bay that looks better than it did the day it rolled off the factory line! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your build-up documentation. Thanks again, Matthew

You are one of the many fans who has a page about this matter. I wish you could answer the following questions:
1.- Why do you have the page?
2.- How often do you actualize the information?
3.- What do you think about the fact that so many pages handle the same information?
4.- Have you received any comments about your page?
I will let you know the information as soon as possible. Thanks a lot.

Comments I've got one and its called the Fun Mobile, because it is. I've had it since 1995 when I bought it with my tax refund check. Now the IRS wants their money back and I'll be damned if they can have my Binder. Well, good luck and never sell this vehicle you will never find a more enjoyable experience, including the woman of your dreams!
I have taken this rig into deep 4wd country and it has never failed me. Everything is original and I have not spent a dime on this truck yet for mechanical work on the engine. Your real axle will likely shear a woodruff key or break the axle but if its just the key, it often is ( don't tow the truck except on flatbed) just replace the wooddruff key right where you are. I keep some spares in my glove box. I had to learn all this the hard way and ended up having to rethread an axle after towing it with my other 4wd. Any hardware store has the right woodruff key for this axle. I'm not sure I can kill this engine, I've tried for three years and nothing seems to work. You see I want to put a rebuilt Ford 302 in when it dies. Also a tractor engine will fit and many other engines as well. Those were the days.

It had been rusting in someone's driveway for years I put in a battery and dumped some gas down the carb. the 232 six fired right up and I drove it home. It was in pretty poor condition, body damage and rust. I have currently pulled the fuel tanks and redone. put on new tires and wheels and have been driving it. I am looking for an overdrive, and any info.

Comments: Hiya. I own a '64 Scout 80. I call it an 80a because I've dropped a 304 in it. The firewall was cut out in a similar manner as the 800A to accomodate a V-8. Since the gearing wasn't altered, I put 31" tires on rims w/a good offset to reduce the highway RPM's a bit, yet they aren't too large to stress out the axles and running gear. I bought it from a guy that worked at a local dealership. The week before I bought it, they painted it in hippie fashion as a joke, and I have been working on getting the old paint stripped and ready for new paint. I think I might invest in some fiberglass panels for it, because things around here that are 31 years old have a big tendency

It only has 20,000 miles on the engine but the body and the trans are lacking. I would like to restore it but I'm currently using for transportation. My father also has a very rusted 1967 800 4x4 w/266 8-cyl. eng. Maybe some day I'll use some parts off the '67 to fix up the '66.

Comments: I have a quick comment on the clutch noise. It may be the throw out bearing not completely coming off the pressure plate. I had this noise (rattle) until I replaced the small spring the gives the bearing pressure to pull off the plate. I do not know your clutch set up which is mechanical verses my hydraulic, so I may be in left field.
It's great that you took your Scout down to the outer banks. I have been going to Buxton for 20 years and the last Scout 80/800 I saw in the sand there was 6 years ago. We take our Cherokee down there and I just got done unpacking from this summer's trip. The whole week there I was thinking of ways to get my Scout down to the outer banks. I can’t drive, the 750 miles from Dayton is 500 miles past my pain tolerance level for diving the Scout.
Let’s see some pictures of your rig!

Comments: This is the very Scout that I grew up with!! My father sold this Scout to you. We took many family trips in the old Scout -- Mom, Dad, & 4 kids all piled in & went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina every fall. Dad rigged a "hammock" over the back seat where one of my brothers slept, he built a bench behind the back seat where I slept, my other brother slept on one of the side seats, & my sister slept on the floor. We had lots of good Dates in that Scout. I hope your restoration goes well & that you enjoy it!!
