UEFA Cup - Round 1 - Leg 2

Celtic sent crashing out

Three men were sent off - two from Celtic and one from Hamburg - as an ill-tempered UEFA Cup return match erupted in violence at Hamurg's Volsparkstadion last night.

Hamburg won the match 2-0 to advance to the third round 4-0 on aggregate but their victory was over-shadowed by the first-half dismissals of Celtic's Malky Mackay and John Hughes who were booked twice by Belarus referee Viktor Schuk.

He also sent off Hamburg's Markus Schupp in the 71st minute for a second bookable offence. It is now 13 years since they have reached the second round of any competition.

Germans Schalke 04 also advanced to the next round. They had no problems beating Roda Kerkrade 5-2 on aggregate after drawing 2-2 on the night.

Holders Bayern Mnchen crashed out of the UEFA Cup despite beating Valencia 1-0 in their return match at the Olympic Stadium.

Jrgen Klinsmann saw his 15th minute penalty saved by Valencia goalkeeper Andoni Zubizaretta and despite some intense Bayern pressure they never got near the necessary target, Bayern's only goal came after two minutes when Mario Basler's inswinging corner from the left was headed into his own net by Javi Navarro under pressure from Christian Ziege.

Two teams scraped through on the away goals rule - Boavista of Portugal and Graz of Austria. Boavista lost 2-1 at home to Odense but drew 4-4 on aggregate and went through because they scored three time in Denmark. Graz, who lost 3-1 to Germinal Ekeren of Belgium won 2-0 at home to qualify.

Daniel Fonseca, whose two goals in Rome left Dynamo Moscow on the ropes inthe first leg, finished the job in Russia with a coolly-taken penalty on the stroke of half-time.

The equaliser from Roma's Uruguayan international striker cancelled out a 19th minute Andrei Kobelev spot kick which had given the Russians a glimmer of hope of overcoming their 3-0 deficit from the away leg. It left a dispirited Dynamo to spend the second half battering aimlessly at the solid Italian defence, opening the way for Damiano Tommasi and Daniele Berretta to add two more, humbling the Moscow side 3-1 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate.

Inter and Lazio eased into the second round despite being held to 1-1 draws at home by French clubs.

Inter went 4-0 up on aggregate when Marco Branca headed home in the seventh minute but Christopher Wreh equalised in the 73rd minute.

Lazio also took first-half lead against Lens, Diego Fuser scoring in the 43rd minute. Lens's striker Smicer levelled the socres in the 67th minute but an uninspired Lazio held on to win 2-1 on aggregate.

Polish striker Andrzej Juskowiak scored twice in Borussia Mnchengladbach's 3-2 win over Arsenal which carried the German side into the second round of the UEFA Cup yesterday.

Arsenal, 3-2 down after the first leg fothe first-round tie in England, turned in a battling performance by could not quite turn the match around.

Juskowiak gave Mnchengladbach a dream start with a 23rd-minute strike after a defence-splitting pass from captain Stefan Effenberg.

But Arsenal fought back with goals from Ian Wright and Paul Merson either side of the interval in a pulsating tie.

Effenberg, the German side's outstanding player, put Mnchengladbach level in the 75th minute with a well-placed shot but Arsenal continued to take the game to the home team, knowing one goal could take the match into extra-time.

Juskowiak took advantage of gaps in the Arsenal defence to hit his second in the 89th minute.
