I'd be happy to give you information about our locale and our opening. Hopefully this can answer some of your questions:
Ferndale is in the Northwest corner of Washington state, about 100 miles North of Seattle. Ferndale is in the heart of Whatcom county, just 5 miles North of Bellingham, which has a good 4-year university and business and technical colleges. About an hour's drive North is the cultural center of downton Vancouver, B.C., Canada, which includes universities as well.
We are looking for an individual qualified to run our entire guard program, from first experiences to WGI finalist guard. Our current setup has involved 3 guards:
-the "prep" guard of middle school students, 1-day a week after school, working on flags.
-the "A" guard of frosh-soph high school students, meeting daily during school and 2 outside rehearsals each week (3 hours each), working with flags and sabers.
-the "open" guard, the Ferndale Performance Ensemble - which competes in the A division currently, meeting daily during school and 2 outside rehearsals each week (4 hours minimum each)Members' work includes flags, sabers and rifles.
The "A" and "open" guards join to make the fall/spring guard, which competes with the band for fieldshows (fall) and parades (fall and spring).
The new instructor can organize the program however desired. Our staff typically prepares all the fall show, and spring parade work, and winterguard work for "prep" and "A" guards.
Our marching band is competetive and has won numerous awards past, has been honored at the D.C. Cherry Blossom festival '97 and Pasadena Rose Parade '95. We are accepting applications for the colorguard opening through July 10, by mail or by fax. I can answer questions at (360)384-9225.
