Minidisc

Minidisc is a technology first introduced by Sony. Basically it's a really small CD, only about 3 inches in diameter. The other difference between MD and CD is that you can record, erase and re-record on minidiscs. All in all it's a really cool thing to have. I got the Sony Minidisc bundle 3. It came with a player/recorder, portable player and 2 minidiscs for only $500. So far it has become a great investment. I've made many copies of my CD's and I've gotten a lot of songs of the radio, MTV etc. One great feature is that when going from CD to MD you get digital copying via a fiber optic link. You can also title your minidiscs. That is on every track you make you can put the song title in so that it is displayed when the song plays(very cool).

I don't really know that much more about it except that now there are minidisc units and accessories made by TDK, Aiwa, Sharp, Maxell, and other companies. The only downfall right now is the price but with any luck it will be coming down. Other than that if you want to know more go to the links below. Especially the Minidisc Community Page. It's got everything you could possibly want to find, and probably much more.

A Few Words on MP3

Another great thing you can do with Minidiscs has to do with MP3's. Since they are such high quality and minidiscs can record digitally, you can get most MP3's recorded at CD quality. I in no way am saying make a bunch of recordings because it's illegal to own songs if you didn't pay for the CD but if I did condone that I would definitely use minidiscs for saving them ;o).
