Dear Education Major,
Welcome to a new semester! By this time you are into your Spring '99 schedule of classes and are that much closer to graduation, transfer and fulfilling your goal of teaching the youth of tomorrow. Let me fill you in on some of the ways the Teacher Education program at Camden County College is planning to make that process as valuable as possible for you.
1. Curriculum News
As you know Rutgers University in Camden has joined with Camden County College to offer some advanced courses on the Blackwood campus. The next logical step in this partnership is to offer at least the junior year of a professional program at Blackwood. I would like the Teacher Education program to be the first professional program available to Camden County College students. The discussions regarding this will take place shortly. I will give you an update in the next newsletter.
I have received inquiries from students regarding a course for credit
involving
students observing and/or being aides in a school setting. Although such
a course is unusual at the freshman or sophomore level, I agree that the
time is right to pursue such an experience. First, a four year college
or university must agree to accept such a course in transfer. See #I above.

It is time for the Education program to have a forum so that student
voices can be more regularly heard. I will be asking some of you to be
part of the first Student Blackwood Advisory Board for the Teacher Education
program. Hopefully, this first group of volunteers can establish an organizational
scheme for our consideration by tile
end of the semester.
2. Education Dinner
The second annual Elementary/Secondary Education Program Forum and Dinner
Camden will be held on Tuesday, March 23 at 6:30 PM. This year's keynote
speaker will
be Marilyn Hammer, Camden Courity's 1998-99 Public School Teacher of theYear.
Invitations will be mailed to you next month. Please make every effort
to attend.
3. Advising
Details regarding advising and scheduling for Summer and Fall 1999 will be in the next newsletter. At this time last year, the Teacher Education program consisted of 207 students. To date the program has almost 400 students enrolled. Obviously, I have not been able to keep up with my desire to see all majors for advisement. In the next letter I will offer some suggestions for advisement which will guarantee your getting the information you need for scheduling and transfer while, at the same time, assuring that your paper file remain current for graduation purposes.
4. Substitute Teaching
Three Substitute Teacher Training Seminars were held in the Fall 1998. The enclosed brochure contains dates for five more seminars this spring and summer. If you will be reaching the sixty credit limit within the next year, I urge you to take advantage of the training. Fifteen graduates of the Fall seminars are already substituting regularly making between $65 and $90 per day.
