Orientation Week for Jan ’99 intake students

4th January 1999

Each term, new students come in to Aman College and with no doubt, twenty-five of these “New-Kids-On-The-Block” had joined in our big family this January. As usual, the Student Association of Aman College held an orientation for these students and this time, it wasn’t just for a day but two whole weeks! Are you kids crazy or something?! What did you guys do? Well, you would never imagine the load of fun we had – we even thought of making it longer!

During the first week, the new intake students were given a briefing by the Management on the rules and regulations of the college, the payment of fees, use of facilities etc. Our principal, Dr See gave us a warm welcome and even showed us slides of the main campus. Also, the presidents of our two major societies, the Student Association (SA) and the Rotaract Club, each gave their speech introducing their clubs and the various activities previously held.

Mostly, the games event dominated the orientation. Through an ice-breaking session, the juniors and seniors got to know each other better and this in turn helps to eliminate the generation gap between them. At times, things got a little out of hand but all in all, everyone had a great time.

The new students were given their “first assignment” – to get four signatures of their seniors according to the list of descriptions given. These seniors from the board of directors of the SA and Rotaract actually had a fun time being “movie stars” and some even played pranks on the new students by denying that the description fits them. Interesting!

The following week was even more interesting as we had the new students put into groups to cook up a short play. It was really amusing seeing them perform their sketches –  one of which acted out “I Know What You Did Last Saturday”, a comedy replica of the hit horror movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Refreshments were served at the end of the day.

Overall, the orientation was a success and this certainly helps to boost up the morale and confidence of the SA team for future organization of activities.

Carrom Competition

22nd & 23rd February 1999

Since the purchase of the carom boards for the leisure of the students, many “Amanians” have picked up the game and some even shone with their fantastic skills in it. As a result, the Student association had decided to hold a competition for these carom maniacs, both for singles and doubles event.
The singles event was held on the 22nd of February and the doubles commenced the following day. A registration fee of RM1 and RM2 is collected for participants of the singles and doubles event respectively.

The main purpose of organizing this carom competition was to build up the rapport among the students. It is not a matter of winning or losing but just a form of relaxation and fun. Actually, it is the first time for the Student Association to hold such an event.

Chua Tian Chai emerged as the winner for the singles event while Sho Boon Hock came in next. As for the doubles event, the pair of Heng Boon Su and Chua Tian Chai versus Yeo Pay Guan and Lim Chee Seng battled on till the end. It was really a tough competition among the two teams as both played excellently well. But alas, the pair of Yeo Pay Guan and Lim Chee Seng emerged as winners. Congrats!

Trophies were presented to the champions and the first runner-ups during the April student intake orientation.

Orientation Night

14th April 1999

The new April ’99 intake students had a wonderful time at the orientation night organized by the Student Association. The three-an-a-half hour session was filled with fun and laughter, not only from the new students but seniors as well as the January ’99 intake students. No doubt, the main objective of this orientation is to give a warm welcome to the new students and allow them to build rapport among their seniors.

The night began with a speech from the organizing chairperson, Teo E-Lyn, followed by our lecturer, Miss Jennifer Lim who talked about the college rules and regulations and a little on friendship. More speeches filled the night as the presidents of the Student Association and the Rotaract Club each gave their briefings on the clubs.

Speeches aside, the night continued with a prize-giving ceremony to the winners for the carom competition held in February. After that, Yong Pey Pey and partner Lim Chee Seng took the stand with their hilarious games that got all of us in stitches.

After an “exhausting” time with the games, the students went back to their seats as they enjoyed a sing-song by the seniors and a duet with Miss Jennifer too. We were very honored to have our own Jacky Cheung and Celine Dion sang for us that night. All the students were in awe and some even encore for more.

We also had our principal, Dr See join us at the end of the night, who helped gave out prizes to the winners of the lucky draw. Three lucky winners walked home with the prizes. The night ended with some refreshments and a group picture for the album.

Seminar – “Love is Sex?”

8th May 1999

On the 8th of May 1999, a seminar was held in Kolej Aman. We were very honored to have A Taiwanese speaker, Madam Feng, to give a talk on the topic of “Love is Sex?”. Madam Feng is not only a terrific speaker and motivator but also a well-known writer, radio broadcaster, deejay and counselor put in one.

At around 2.30 pm, the students took their seats and Madam Feng began her talk. Though the response of the students was not overwhelming, the students who were present gave their full cooperation and were full of zest.

A lot was learnt from Madam Feng. The topic on love gave students a considerable insight into its meaning. It was an eye opener to some students who were into relationships. Madam Feng talked about the meaning of true love and that love is something that comes with responsibilities. Before actually stepping into a relationship, one must go through five phases : social, intellectual, spiritual, emotion and physical.

The first phase, which is the social phase, explains that an individual has to get to know the other individual through friends as a group. The second one is the intellectual phase. During this phase, an individual would try to know the other individual’s opinions and thinking, whether or not that individual is mature mentally. It is also the phase where there is a one-to-one communication between the individuals.

One’s religion affects one’s values. This explains about the third phase – spiritual. If both individuals are of the same religion, it would be better. It is a step to a deeper understanding of the person. It is only when the first three phases have been successfully understood and comprehended will one move into the emotional phase.

The final phase, which is the physical phase talks about body contact. Madam Feng stressed that an individual should not move to this phase until he or she is sure of having a lasting relationship.

After one hour of thought-provoking talk, Madam Feng opened the question-and-answer session to the floor. A number of questions were raised by the students. From this seminar, the students went back with a “heartful” knowledge of love. Madam Feng was able to get hold of the students’ attention with her jokes and great sense of humor.

As a token of appreciation, a gift was presented to Madam Feng with the compliments of the Student Association. Later, a group photo was taken for the album and the students dispersed at around 4.30 pm.

Spring Cleaning

10th May 1999

The spring-cleaning event has been carried out every semiannually by the Student Association of the college. The SA board was divided into four groups with group 1 and 2 in charge of the upstairs toilets and cleaning of windows as well as the cleaning and arranging of tables and chairs in the classrooms upstairs. Group 3 and 4 did the same division of work but for downstairs.

Surprisingly, we had a few non-board directors who also joined in the fun of cleaning. All of us had a wonderful time and indeed, not only did we finish our work fast but we also had spare time to “clean” ourselves with soap water.

The Health and Cleanliness Director, Lim Lek Fun inspected the cleaned premises to ensure that everything was spick and span before calling the day off.

Mountain Climbing

June 1999

Recently, the Student Association had just organized a mountain climbing competition at Bukit Banang in Minyak Beku. It was supposed to be the association’s September activity but was being replaced of the Pulau Tioman trip, which was previously cancelled.

The winners are divided into two categories; male and female. The first person to reach the top will walk away with the prize money of RM25, the second, RM15 and the third walks home with RM10.

The response of the students was overwhelming at the beginning but due to the report of JE virus spreading around Minyak Beku, many students began to change their mind. Nevertheless, about twenty students turned up for the climb. Some went to Bukit Banang by their own while others hitched a ride with friends from college.

Everyone grouped at the starting point and as our SA president, Yew Kong Song, announced the start of the race, the guys zoomed straight ahead, leaving the group of girls trailing behind. Some just kept on walking uphill while others took rests in between. It was no easy task for us, especially for those who do not exercise frequently.

The winner of the male category, Lee Paer Guan, came after we started but caught up with the rest of us very quickly. He picked up tremendous speed and even overtook the guys who were nearly reaching the top! Wow!

Forty-five minutes later, the competition ended when everyone reached the peak and all were in awe with the view over the whole Batu Pahat. The winners emerged with Paer Guan first, followed by Lim Chee Seng, Oh Kim Siong and Chua Tian Chai who shared the second prize and a few other guys third. As for the female category, Angelica Tan took the leading position while friend Tan Sea Ping came up second. There was no third winner as the other girls forfeited the attempt of climbing – too tiring!

Everyone had a wonderful and memorable time after the activity.

Orientation Week for July intake students

15th & 22nd July

In the month of July, yet another 15 new students enrolled into College Aman. As usual, the Student Association organized an orientation for the students to welcome the new students and in turn allow everyone to know each other better.

This time the orientation lasted for only two days, one on the 15th and the other a week after. On the first day, we had our lecturer Miss Jennifer Lim to give a speech on the rules and regulations of the college, followed by briefings by the presidents of the Student Association and the Rotaract Club, Yew Kong Song and Ng Yeow Hin respectively.

The new students were given their first assignment, a piece of paper each where they are to find the senior according to the descriptions given and get their signatures. These seniors are mostly from the board of directors from the SA and the Rotaract. The students were given one weeks’ grace to find the seniors and are to pass up the completed form during the following week. Due to the small amount of attendees, we played a few get-to-know-each-other games and ended the day.

During the second day, the response of the students was better. We had our Student Advisor, lecturer Mr Joshua Wong to give some tips on studying. Students had a hilarious time with his jokes and listened attentively. As our game organizer, Lim Chee Seng took the floor with his games, everyone was excitedly having a wonderful time. Our lecturer even joined in the fun! The games emphasized a lot on memory – we are to remember the names of all the attendees.

The day ended with refreshments and a picture was taken for the album.

Orientation Day

15th October 1999

On the 15th of October 1999, the Student Association of Kolej Aman had organized an orientation day for the July and October’s intake of new students. The main purpose of organizing the orientation is to enable the new students to know the seniors in the college. Besides, it also enhances a stronger bond among the students. Apart from that, the orientation too helps the new students to adapt themselves into college life.

Before this big day arrived, the board of directors of Student Association had carried out a meeting and planned ahead to make this big day a successful one. The board of directors, especially the Organizing Chairperson, Ms Gan Sze Pei had made sure that all the programs were lined up accordingly. One day before the orientation day, the venue was decorated with colourful crepe papers so that the hall would look livelier.

Around thirty to forty students attended the orientation day. At 10.00 am sharp, the occasion started. We started off with a handful of speeches. Our organizing chairperson, Ms Gan Sze Pei, presented the first speech. She welcomed the new intake students and hope that they were able to adapt to the new college life.

Next came our principal, Dr See. In his speech, he stressed on three questions, “who am I?”, “what am I doing in Kolej Aman?” and “where am I going?”. When he stated the first question, “who am I?”, he was actually trying to remind us that we were no longer a secondary school student but a college student. We should respect for who we are. In his second question, he reminded us the purpose of being in Kolej Aman that is to study. In his last question, he hope that we were able to know which direction we are heading to. Last but not least, he ended his speech with his most powerful quotation “Knowledge is Power” and hoped that we could enjoy our life in college and cherish the friendship bond that we had built.

The Student Association’s President, Mr. Yew Kong Song, too dropped a few words for the new intake students. He stated the purpose of Student Association and hope that the new intake students would joined in whatever activities that we would organized in the coming future. Next, our advisor, the lecturer of Kolej Aman, Mr. Joshua Wong came in and gave a few words of advice. He gave out pamphlets containing the examination structure to the new intake students, as they may not be familiar with them. He also encouraged the students to look for him if there was anything that they don’t understand.
Lastly, the President of Rotaract Club of Kolej Aman, Ms Teo E-Lyn, gave her golden words to the new intake students. She even promoted her club and hoped that the new intake students would join in the club and serve the community as what the rotaractors did.

After listening to a handful of speeches, there was a prize giving ceremony. We invited our advisor, Mr. Joshua Wong to give away the medals and prize money to the jogathon winners. After prize giving, came the presentation. Our Mr. President showed his talent by performing a Cantonese song named, “Wishing You Happy”. He plucked the guitar while singing the song that was sang by Beyond. Next, he together with Kolej Aman’s Jacky Cheung, Mr. Ng Yeow Hin performed a second song for the audience. They sang out the song “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. As both of them were talented, the audience was carried away by their beautiful voices.

Fortunately, our game organizer, Ms Yong Pey Pey and her assistant, Mr. Lim Chee Seng came into the rescue. They captured the audience back by carrying out five games for the audience to be involved in. The first game carried out was the questioning and answering session. This game enabled the students to know the college well. Besides giving questions about the college, they also asked questions regarding the current situation occurred in this orientation. This was able to capture whether the student were paying attention or not during the orientation. However, the organizer herself was not paying attention as she asked a wrong question. She, of course, had to be punished as requested by the participants.

The second game was a memory game. The organizer brought a box containing a few items. Every group was given one minute to memorize as many things as they can. When the time was up, the organizer picked a person from each group and asked them to name those items that they can remember. This was a great game as it could test the person memory.

The third game was a much challenging game. It was known as the colour-blind game. Each group member was to take turn to pick out green beans out of the mixture of red and green beans. It was quite a tough game as these beans were stored in a cup. The participant could only used one hand to pick out the beans. Tough!

Next came the hair designing competition. There were a few guy models, all in short hair, sitting on the chair waiting for the hairdressers to tie their hair. Each participant was given ten rubber bands. They had to tie as many as they could within a given period of three minutes. The winners of this competition were Ng Chin Siew and partner Willy Ong.

The last game that was carried out was luck game. Each student was given a piece of paper. On that piece of paper, there were five columns. Each student had to fill these five columns with five different numbers, ranging from one to zero. Then the organizer instructed what each column stands for. As each column stand for units, tens, hundreds and thousands, the student that managed to construct the largest number is the winner.

At around 12.00pm, all the games were carried out and the students proceeded to the next room where the refreshment was placed. There was a lot of food waiting for the students to grab. Fried rice, fried noodles, chicken curry and other fried goodies were served. There were fruits and beverages too. At this time most of the students were tired and hungry. Most students grabbed their food, as though they were hungry wolves.

All’s well ends well. The orientation was successfully carried out with the corporation of the Student Association of Kolej Aman and the students of Kolej Aman. It ended around 1.00pm.
