THIS IS THE MOST COMMON QUESTION ASKED BY YALE PARENTS
Yale University Campus may appear to be a safe and secure environment; but as the Yale Daily News headlines to the bottom of the page show, it can be, at times, a dangerous place. We are the Police Officers and Detectives who respond to all campus crimes in progress and make the apprehensions of those responsible. Who would better know about what crimes occur at Yale? These headlines are exemplar of the serious crimes that have ocurred at Yale; crimes in which many of the victims were students.
The men and women of the Yale Police Benevolent Association take our profession very seriously. Through the efforts of the Yale Police patrol officers and detectives, campus crime has been reduced. We are committed to making all Yale, its buildings, streets, and sidewalks, safe for students; but we need your help. For over fifteen months, we have been negotiating a successor labor agreement with Yale University. Our goal from the beginning has been to attain a fair settlement that contains police-oriented benefits, such as pension and disability, to match the job that we perform, and help retain the best qualified officers. Many of our young officers now leave Yale for other police departments with better benefits. Many of our negotiation proposals are low cost, or non-cost items that will support a workplace containing disciplinary due process and employee rights. Presently, the University is holding the negotiations hostage. They are unwilling to present a substantive economic proposal until the Union drops a majority of its proposals, even though many cost Yale nothing. The Yale Police Benevolent Association is ready to negotiate, but against ourselves!
