A Selection of Bill Thayer's Pages
When I was a University Assistant Registrar, I advocated the use of the Web as a means of
storing, distributing, collecting and otherwise manipulating student/university data.
I am delighted to see fine examples of the use of the Web for these purposes.
In order to effectively use a Web based registration form, the
University's Catalog
must also be available. This is a sample with the University of Rhode Island as an example.
With the simple addition of a cgi form (remember this is only an
example; I used my version of a grants query form; please do not fill it out!),
online registration can be undertaken from any
terminal--within the enrollee's high school, from terminals at the University,
from anywhere around the world. The University can maintain a server which will
instantly show the current enrollment status for any course, including withdrawals
creating new openings. No more long, frustrating lines! Luckily, Harvard at least
has found other uses for Memorial Hall--where registration was one of the earliest, and most
frustrating, experiences for the new freshman and upperclassman as well. On-line applications are now also accepted. In fact, at MIT's Sloan School of Management, they are required!
Technology for Registrars-Electronic Data Interchange will be very helpful.
Since athletic certification is also an important part of the Registrar's Office daily
work, you may want to consult the Athletics Page I've put up as
well.
Thanks for visiting.

A nice query form of the type that could easily meet the needs of a
Registrar's Office, or Admissions, particularly for Catalog
requests, transcript information, athletic certification information
or any of the myriad queries to a Registrar's Office. Of course the College Catalog
itself should be on line also! A
schedule of important dates is helpful to the student and staff.
