Prof. Konstantin Matveev is an Assyrian from Russia. His father is from Gavar, his mother from Al-Bak and both his parents are Assyrians from Turkey.
During World War I his grandparents participated in the Assyrian Rebellion against the Ottoman Empire and were repressed as many Assyrians were. Matveev's grandfather Mishko on his mother's side was killed by the Kurds and Turks.
Matveev's Grandfather Mammu Bar-Mattai from Gavar participated in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78 on the Russian side and received the permission to settle down in the kars province of Turkey in the village of Samawat. During World War I his parents found their refuge in Russia in the city of Voronesh-600 km from Moscow. prof. Matveev was born in that city on the tenth of December 1934 and finished the secondary school in 1953 on an excellent note as one of the best pupils and entered teacher's Institute, the faculty of Foreign Languages-the English and German Languages.
After the graduation from the Institute in 1958 Prof. Matveev taught at the local University and in 1959 after his marriage he moved to Moscow. In Moscow he finished the Postgraduate Course of the Institute of Orientalistics and defended the thesis in 1965 on the topics: "The Assyrian question in World War I and after " and became master of arts in history.
In 1983 he defended the doctor's dissertation on the topic: "The struggle of the Assyrian people from freedom and Independence"- the end of the 19th century-the 70th of the 20th century".
In 1985 he received the title of Professor. He was a deputy-chief of Department History of Russia, Chief of the Department of Politology (Politics), President of the Academy "Rus" and "Assyria" of the Pedagogical Society of Russia.
Prof. Matveev published 15 books about the Assyrian history, their culture, habits and traditions and more than 300 articles in Russian, Arabic, English and Assyrian.
In Dec. 1997 Professor Matveev completed a course in History of religions in United Kingdom and returned to Moscow in November 1997. He is the President of the Assyrian Refugees Relief Foundation of U.K.
