Book Reviews

Using Microsoft FrontPage 98 ISBN 0-7897-1343-8

By Dennis Jones and Neil Randall, Que  1997.  This book is part of Que's Special Edition series.  This is the main reference book that I use for web page development.  I found the book to be more or less accurate (some of the text seemed to be based o the Beta release) and comprehensive (also covers a little Javascript and ActiveX).  While those just starting to create web pages may find the book a little overwhelming,  it still deserves a place on your shelf.  It is one book that you will find yourself coming back to over and over.  I highly recommend it.  Click to Buy this Book

Microsoft FrontPage 98 At a Glance  ISBN 1-57231-637-3

By Stephan Nelson, Microsoft Press  1997.   This one of the books I have used in my Introduction to FrontPage workshops.  I have had a lot of positive feedback from the students (most had little prior experience with FrontPage or web publishing in general).  Most like the visual layout of the book.  Each set of instructions were accompanied by screen shots so they could see what to expect.  I recommend this book to those just start with FrontPage.   Click to Buy this Book

FrontPage 98 Fast and Easy   ISBN 0-7615-1534-8

By Coletta Witherspoon, Prima Publishing  1998.  The author has reduced the text to a minimum and uses screen shots as visual instructions.  The book takes you through the creation of a site that relies heavily on FrontPage themes and extensions.   The book does live up to its promise.  The development if a professional looking site (in the Microsoft mold) was indeed fast and easy.  However, I did miss the explanatory text.  I would recommend this book to those who would like to get their site completed quickly and don't like to do a lot of reading. It had a Five Star rating from Amazon customers

Create FrontPage 98 Web Pages In a Weekend  ISBN 0-7615-1348-5

By Dave Rasmussen and Richard Cravens, Prima Publishing 1998.  This is an easy to read introductory text to FrontPage 98.  The authors  spend a good portion of the book explaining the use of Microsoft's Image Composer.  There is an accompanying CD.   However, most of the included programs duplicate features found in FrontPage, e.g. text editor and animated GIF creator.  This book is OK to buy.

FrontPage 98 for Windows  ISBN 0-201-69694-0

By Phyllis Davis and Deborah Craig, Peach Pit Press 1998.  In this book the authors take a visual approach to the presentation of the material.  They do, however, include sufficient text to help you understand what you are doing.  Another nice touch is that they have a  chapter on the basics of good web design.  This is generally missing from many introductory books.  I would highly recommend this for those just starting with FrontPage.  Students who have taken my seminar have also found this to be a good book.  I highly recommend it.

FrontPage for Dummies  ISBN 0-7645-0270-0

By Asha Domfest, IDG Books 1998.  The Dummies series seem to have a book covering every facet of human existance.  The author has combined a lively writing style with accurate content to produce an excellent book for those just begining with FrontPage.   While some may think that the Dummies series has gotten out of hand, one need only to read this book to see why they are so popular.  Funny and fact filled, I highly recommend this book.  Click to Buy this Book
