In setting our goals for our Centennial gift to the University of the Philippines, we must recognize our strengths. We have thousands of alumni in North America who care about their Alma Mater. Many of these caring individuals have been very generous in the past. Through the Friends of UP, we have provided varied and convenient ways for alumni to channel their support to the University. And with Friends’ 501-c-3 status as a nonprofit organization, donations are fully deductible in the USA. Alumni in Canada will be provided with necessary receipts and acknowledgments to have their donations deductible, as well.

| Gift Fund Goal: $4,500,500 | OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO |
The program of giving, which was recently mailed to all alumni, allows each friend of the UP to give at a level in line with their finances. While we do have a few years to develop the program before the gift is presented, we hope that donors do not succumb to the “mañana” habit. Many alumni have already sent in their contributions and pledges. Some creative donors are giving in new ways such as charitable remainder trusts, inclusion in their wills, and insurance. Some are considering donating highly appreciated assets such as stocks to avoid capital gains taxes.
But, from the majority of alumni and friends of the University, we have not received any word. If pledges are the only possible commitment at this time, they will be most welcomed. This will allow us to plan for the Centennial gift. Donations can come from not only individuals, but groups of alumni and their friends. This way the resources of the entire “village” can be used to build a respectable gift. It is a modest goal, an attainable goal. We can all work together to make a difference for education in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Kaya natin ‘to! This is the Bayanihan spirit, the UP spirit! As a community of alumni and friends, we shall reach our goal!!!
Enclosed please find my check... This is in appreciation of UP for establishing a masters program at Clark Field for U.S. Air Force personnel. My participation in this program made it possible for me to qualify for a promotion leading ultimately to my retirement. I received my M.A. in Political Science in 1955. Fortunately I was able to complete my studies at the Diliman Campus. There the faculty, the staff and my fellow students were unfailingly helpful and co-operative. My experiences at UP were among the pleasantest in my life.
Sincerely,

I am writing on behalf of my mother, Nancy Martinez-Lagrimas ’57, who passed away November of 1996…we would like to inform her fellow classmates of her passing. My mother spoke very highly of her connection to U.P., telling us countless stories of her years spent there. We have many pictures showing us her happy experience as a student and Sigma Deltan. We miss her greatly and I’m sure that anyone who knew her will be saddened by her passing.
Sincerely,
Christine Lagrimas
