UPAA SUPPORTS UP COMMONWEALTH PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
The Board of Directors of the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) has expressed their unconditional support of the University of the Philippines administration in its bid to generate resources through the Commonwealth Property Development Project. Their statement of support was agreed upon during their meeting held last April 17, 1997, at the Bahay ng Alumni, Diliman. UPAA officials present during the meeting headed by Regents Edgardo B. Espiritu and Nelia T. Gonzales, said the University should be commended for taking aggressive efforts to raise funds to support the academic and administrative operations in order for it to remain the country's premier academic institution and national university. UP hopes to augment its budget from the national government through joint venture project involving the development of its Commonwealth Property into a business and commercial center in Quezon City.
UP officials admit that the increasing cost and demands of providing quality education for its students entail a budget bigger than the amount it already receives from the government. However, since UP already gets the biggest share of the higher education budget, it is actively pursuing resource generation activities through its land grants. Now under consideration by the UP Board of Regents is the Development of the UP property in the Sierra Madre Area.
UPM ALUMNI DONATE PROFESSORIAL GRANT FOR MEDICINE
To celebrate his 99th birthday, UP Manila alumnus and former faculty member Dr. Jose Dualan (MD '28), his wife Dr. Florencia Padilla and their family, gave a distinguished professorial chair grant to the UP College of Medicine. The grant was received by UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Olivia C. Caoili on behalf of UP President Emil Q. Javier, UP Manila Chancellor Perla D. Santos Ocampo and CM Dean Amelia R. Fernandez last March 18 at the PGH Social Hall.
The university has of late been actively tapping alumni and its former students to augment its meager resources. Thus, as Dr. Caoili explained, one problem of the university is retaining good graduates and professors who are often lured to greener pastures. The generous endowment given by the Padilla family, called distinguished because it amounted to P1 million and was three and a half times more than most professorial chair grants of P300,000, will go a long way to convince the faculty to remain with the university.
