The full foot fins are designed to be worn without any wet-suit boots and only come in set sizes, i.e. they are not adjustabe. The adjustable strap fins are worn over wet-suit boots and can fit a range of foot sizes. Adjustable strap fins tend to have support ridges to provide extra strength. Adjustable-strap fins are more common as they can be shared between people of different foot sizes.
This is an example a full foot fin that has been configured for greater speed. The V-shape allows smaller faster kicks. Over long distances, the V-shape means less effort is required per kick so a diver will not become as tired. The down side to these are when swimming up or down, the diver is required to do more kicks and do them faster reslting in increased fatigue.
This is an example of the type of fin I currently use. As you can see it has an adjustable strap but what makes it different from the adjustable strap fin in the top picture is that the middle ribs have been removed and a more flexible material put in place. This increses the amount of power or thrust from each kick of the leg. It has the advantage over the V-shaped fin in that faster kicks are not needed, just more controlled kicks. Of course there might be a tiny, tiny possibility that I am ever so slightly biased towards this type of fin seeing as that's what I use. Still, can you blame me for liking my own kit??
