Report by Boy Masakayan, member by default: 3>
I attended a board meeting of the SBC Alumni Association (SBCAA) last March 16 and I would like to report on some developments.
1. There is a SBCAA and there is a SBC Alumni Foundation (SBCAF). They are composed of practically the same set of officers and members (called Trustees). There are both 15 members in the SBCAA and the SBCAF. The basic difference is that the foundation is the arm that dispenses the funds for academic and athletic scholarships, professorial chairs, and other grantees.
2. The funds that are raised by a HS batch are given to the SBCAA for deposit to the account in the name of the donor, say SBC HS 74. The amount is deposited in Security Bank and stays there forever. It is only the accrued interest from this account that is utilized for scholarships. The annual interest is divided into 75% to the SBC Alumni foundation for disbursements and the 25% goes to the SBCAA
3. Each donor batch has to raise at least P 250,000 to sponsor one academic scholar. The annual interest will pay for his academic needs (tuition, books, fees)
4. Each batch can have a say on how their donation can be used if they raise at least P 250,000. You can even have your own set of trustees for the disposition of the funds. You can choose your own scholar in any benedictine school.
5. At present, there is less than P 4,000,000 in total Alumni funds deposited in Security Bank and East West Bank.
6. The last Red and White Ball held at the Manila Hotel last Feb 18 is an annual affair hosted by the SBCAA (not the silver jubilarians) and raised P 300,000++ for the SBCAA.
7. As the silver jubilarians, we are responsible for contacting other batches to join the homecoming. We need to contact the golden jubilarians HS 50. The graduating classes of 2000 in the colleges and the HS 2000, and our professors shall also be invited to participate in the homecoming.
8. The homecoming has been scheduled on Saturday, February 19, 2000. This date was set in that meeting due to the request of the USA Bedans so they could plan their trips.
9. Our SBC HS 1975 Foundation will be set up by Atty. Jito Arreza and will require 15 members. We hope to settle this mission by tomorrow's scheduled meeting at the Club Filipino, March 19. We also will set up three commitees (1) Ways and Means (planning and implementation of all activities of the batch), (2) Finance (sourcing and disbursement of funds), and (3) Membership ( gathering names, addresses, numbers, and getting them to attend meetings). That is primarily tomorrow's agenda.
10.The funds that are to be raised by our foundation can be utilized in any manner we choose. Like if we so decide to fund Fr. Ed's mission in Bukidnon, no problem. The sponsoring of an academic scholar, via the SBCAA, is a matter of tradition only, though I really think we should continue this honored tradition. Remember our fund stays there in perpetuity in our name. Only the interest is used for expenses.
11. I have an updated list of telephone numbers, but I will post it after tomorrow's meeeting for additional stuff..
12. I saw last week Dr. Felina Young. Our former Math teacher is still teaching in SBC and La Salle MBA classes. She is not teaching Math, Trigo or Algebra. She has a doctorate in Business Management and is teaching Management and Enterpreneurship to Senior college students. She is scheduled to be awarded a professorial chair by the SBCAA in June. Oh yes, boys, she still loooks good for her age. Her only daughter, her eldest too, is to be wed this May. Dr. Felina Young's B-day is on March 23. Guess her age. Sorry, I have no e-mail address yet.
13. Finally, I am happy to announce that the SBCAA has unanimously agreed to support the campaign that our batch will be leading - the San Beda 100 Birthday Fund.
SBC is turning 100 years old on June 2001. I suggested that all Bedans, Past and Present, will give a birthday gift of P 100 to the SBC 100 B-day Fund. This means all Bedans, whether they only studied a year in GS, HS, College or in St Benedict's College (in Alabang, in case you didn't know Fr Tarsi and Fr Lucas (our Andre Centeno) is based there). We will also include families of Bedans. That is a lot of Bedans. Mr. Liwanag's estimate is easily 100,000 to 500,000 maximum. At only P 100 each whether you are rich or a kindergarden student, this is so affordable.
The plan is to open an account in one or two banks with nationwide branches who will receive this gift as deposits to one account number. So Bedans anywhere can easily give the gift. When they make the deposit they shall also fill up a SBCAA personal information form which will then be forwarded to the SBCAA. This is the most important gift of all, not the P100, the information. This information will be valuable to really expand the directory of the SBCAA (which is outdated and unfortunately, pathetic).
As motivation and a token of appreciation for the gift of P 100 and the information, all Bedans shall be given a lapel pin commemorating SBC's 100th B-day. This pin will definitely be a valuable souvenir and collectors item. The system of delivery of this pin is still being studied.
I am happy to say that our Valedictorian, Gabby Consulta, whose expertise is marketing as the Head of Mktg of Nestle Phils., has agreed to help in the planning of the marketing campaign of this project. I am doubly happy to say also that our Salutatorian, Joel Baares, as our Undersecretary of Finance, has agreed to help in arranging for the Banking requirements. Gentlemen, we have our top guns here.
Since our batch will initiate this project, our batch will receive a percentage (5% - 10%) of the B-day Fund (after expenses) to be used for our scholar or scholars. Batch 76, will be finishing this project, hence they will also receive the similar percentage for their scholar(s).
This is not the only fund raising for us. Our HS 75 Foundation still has to make plans for our own fund raising ventures to be used for our own means.
I shall present this initial plan to our classmates tomorrow. In the next SBCAA meeting in April, I have been requested to give more details of the plan.
Finally, I hope we get at least 35 to 40 attendees tomorrow. We plan to have at least once every two months. We plan to get everybody involved, to feel that they matter. After tomorrow, I shall be passing on the chores of the keeper of the list to somebody else. Others must do the calling to get them involved.
Goodnight, Gentlemen.
