When back up?
- on a regular
basis
-
- programs - after
changing any preferences (menus, tool bars,
etc.)
-
- data files - after
making any changes, at end of work
session
-
Ways to back up?
- on floppy disks
(use if you have relatively little on your
hard drive; short-term storage - a few months;
easy to damage disk)
drag files
you want onto disk
use a back-up
program such as CopyDoubler (copy only files
that have changedsince last work session);
can be done unattended at pre-set times;
option for archive (individual file) or disk
image (whole disk at once)
- on tape ( for
2-6 gig; short-term storage - up to a year or
so; easy to damage tape)
- on a removable
drive ( for 100 meg - about 3 gig; long-term
storage - up to a few years or so)
- Optical
drive
- holds 100 meg
to 3 gig; fast, small, reliable; difficult
to damage disk
- Iomega
drive
- Zip drives
holds 100 meg ;Jaz drive holds 1 gig; not
as fast as hard drive
- Syquest
drive
- holds 44 to 270
meg; not as fast as hard drive
-
- CD-ROM
backup
- up to 600 meg; for
permanent information such as applications (can
only write once, but multi-session option
permits you to add more info at a later time);
very long-term storage; easily scratched if not
kept in case
-
- your system
administrator can set up remote backups to a
networked drive (tape or other type); slowest
method, but most reliable and efficient
-
Why back up?
- to make sure that all
of your programs and data files are safe from
summer intruders
-
- to enjoy your
vacation, resting assured that your files are
safe and secure. Have a great
summer!
