Administration Building This past summer, as you know, I accepted a recommendation from the Committee on Academic Freedom and Tenure (CAFT) and terminated a distinguished member of our faculty, Regents Professor Marguerite Kay, for scientific misconduct. The responsibilities of my office require me not only to make such difficult decisions but also to consult with the faculty before acting, and then to explain my decisions. The time has come for explanations. I want to begin by meeting personally with those faculty members who have been honored nationally through election to the National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Engineering or the Institute of Medicine, or have been honored by the University itself through appointments as Regents Professor or Distinguished University Professor.Please join me in Room 205 of the Alumni-Foundation Swede Johnson Building on Thursday, November 12, at 5:00 p.m. I want to use this informal meeting to describe the basis for my decision, and to seek your advice regarding communication with the full faculty. I will be joined by Distinguished University Professor Jerrold Hogle who, as Chair of the Faculty, will describe the role of the Faculty in the matter. Then I will describe my own decision process after receiving CAFT's recommendation, and respond to your questions.
