| Course Description: Public Speaking is a one semester course that explores the art of communication in our daily lives. Units of the course will include the following: encoding, decoding, the communication model, listening, researching skills, outline and manuscripts, perception, group communication, and nonverbal and verbal communication. We will also explore many facets of speech making, such as topic selection, preparation, introductions, conclusions, and good speech delivery skills. A variety of different speeches will be given during the semester ranging from short introductory speeches to longer group projects. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Some assignments, such as speeches will count for more than other assignments, such as quizzes. In order to pass the class, students must present all speeches assigned, since this is primarily a speech class and the overall objective is to teach good public speaking skills. Students cannot demonstrate that they have learned and improved on those skills without giving speeches. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Quizzes and Tests: Quizzes will be given randomly throughout the semester. Tests will be given at the end of each unit of study. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Final Exam: Any material covered during the course of the semester could be on the exam. Exams count as 1/5 of the overall semester grade. Each semester counts as 2/5. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Writing assigments: Numerous compositions will be assigned. They range from reaction papers to things we learn about our communication with others, to speech outlines, notes, manuscripts, and critiques. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Homework Rules: All homework is expected to be turned in on time. Everyday it is late is a 10% drop in the grade, unless it is due to an excused absence. No work will be accepted if it is more than one week late. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Make up work policy: Students will be required to see the instructor after return from an absence to determine how long they will be given to make up the assignment(s) missed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| All homework will be put two weeks at a time online so that students can check to make sure that they are not missing anything.They should be able to see if they missed notes, and get with another student for those. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Extra Credit Projects: Students can earn extra credit in one of several ways: Bringing in a guest speaker from a local business or organization that they like to our class. They must introduce the speaker and tell why they chose this speaker. Another way to earn extra credit would involve helping Mrs. Bruder with a special speech project.
