Course Description: Drama 1 is one semester introductory course into the theater. Units of the course will include the following: Concentration and imagination, observation, the fundamentals of play productions, the art of staying in character, stage directions and areas of the stage, pantomime, improvisation, projection and diction , stage terminology, Drama History and origins, relaxation techniques, how to read a play (plot, conflict, character), the art of play reports, and the art of the critiquing performances using constructive criticism.
Course objectives/Student Outcomes: During the semester students will be able to do the following:
1. Use concentration, observation, and imagination to remember lines, cues, and create and stay in character
2. Read and write about a play’s plot, conflict, and character motives.
3. Fairly critique the performances of themselves and others.
3. Fairly critique the performances of themselves and others.
4. Use projection and good diction on the stage.
5. Write effective play reports.
6. Write and memorize classroom scenes for 1,2, or more characters.
7. Utilize relaxation techniques to conquer stage fright.
8. Pantomime scenes from Greek Drama and/or act in masks as the Greeks did.
9. Understand and utilize stage terminology, directions, and areas.
10. Know and understand the fundamentals of play productions
Course Grading Scale: (% based)
100-95=A 79-77=C+ 63-60=D-
94-90=A- 76-74=C 59-0 =E
89-87=B+ 73-70=C-
86-84=B 69-66=D+
83-80=B- 65-64=D
Quizzes and Tests: quizzes will be given randomly throughout the semester. Tests will be given at the end of each unit.
Final Exam material covered: any information covered during the course of the semester could be on the exam.
Compositions: Numerous writing assignments will be assigned (3-4 play reports, various dialogues for 2 or more characters, several dialogues, and a large group presentation)
Homework Rules: All homework is expected to be completed on time, every day is it late = a 10% drop n the grade unless it is due to an excused absence, in which case see the make-up work policy. No work will be accepted if it is more then one week late.
Make-Up work policy: Students will be required to see the instructor after return from an absence and at that time will be given time to complete assignments in proportion to the time missed from class. Students may also make up work during seminar period.
Extra Credit Projects: Students can ear extra credit in one of two ways: Writing extra play reports, or starring in or assisting in of the school’s play productions.
