Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, was established by Dr. Judson Q. Owen in May 1924, at Dakota Welseyan College in Mitchell, South Dakota. Today, there are over 500 chapters throughout the United States and the world.

The society's name is derived from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that make up the society's official motto: Sincerity, Truth, and Design. The official flower of Sigma Tau Delta is the red rose; the official colors are cardinal and black.

The purpose of the society is to recognize outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and professional students of the English language and literature. The society also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the language and literature fields.

Sigma Tau Delta provides its members numerous opportunities to develop their skills in creative and analytical writing, to advance the study of language and literature, and to meet with prominent scholars and professionals in the discipline of English. Student members can gain international recognition through professional internships, teaching awards, and academic scholarships. Additionally, student members have the opportunity to present original creative and analytical work at the annual international convention and at regional conferences; student members also have the opportunity to interact with faculty, students, and professional from other states and foreign nations.
