1 oz thoroughwort
1 oz slippery elm
1 oz stick licorice

Simmer together in 1 qt water until strength is extracted. Strain carefully, add 1 pt best molasses and 1/2 lb loaf sugar, simmer them all well together and when cold bottle it tight. No better remedy can be found for croup, bronchitis, all affections of lungs and throat. (found handwritten on old envelope of Gertrude Spaniol)
