SP Graduation Ceremony
25 July 2001

Innovation in abundance
at Graduation Ceremony

The 41st Graduation Ceremony will be remembered for the many firsts it achieved
and going where no other local institutions have gone. Despite being the most established
polytechnic in Singapore, no one can accuse SP of having lost its pioneering spirit.

This year’s graduation ceremony scored a number of firsts. After many years at Kallang Theatre, the venue was moved next door to the more spacious Singapore Indoor Stadium. With this, the four-day event of the past was compressed into a single day comprising two sessions. Highlighting the benefits of the move, the Principal Mr Low said in his address: "We are therefore several times more productive. In addition, with a larger venue, we are able to make this a grander occasion."

And grander it was. The 41st Graduation Ceremony on 25 July introduced a new format of presenting diplomas never tried before locally.
The 5,201 graduands received their scroll boxes in two lines. Technology was used to facilitate the whole process as all graduands had a small card with their student ID numbers bar-coded on it which were scanned as they approached the stage causing their names to be instantly flashed on one of two huge screens beside the stage. To maintain the grandeur of the event, there was accompaniment of music provided by a pianist on a grand piano and the SP Concert Band throughout the presentation.

But some things did not change. As each graduand received his scroll box from his School’s Director or one of the Deputy Principals, the moment was captured on film.
Also for the first time, graduands, their parents and their lecturers could make song dedications which were played during the reception at the end of the event. For this, they donated a small sum of money to the Student Needy Fund. Care and concern in action here. "Last year, the Polytechnic provided financial assistance amounting to $1.5 m to more than 1,200 students using the Student Needy Fund as well as other funds," noted the Principal.

During the reception, 17 graduands whose birthday happened to fall on Graduation Day were presented surprise birthday gifts by their respective School Directors – another first.

Acting Minister for the Environment and Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Mr Lim Swee Say was the guest of honour for the first session. Mr Lim presented the awards to this year’s top students. The guest speaker for the afternoon session was Mr Teo Ming Kian, Chairman of the Economic Development Board.
