BURIED: CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION, WESTMINSTER, MD

On June 29, 1863, Lt. John W. Murray was killed in a skirmish at Westminster, Maryland between members of the 1st Delaware Cavalry and the 4th Virginia Cavalry. The fight resulted in four fatalities, two on either side. All four men were buried in Westminster; however, the other three were subsequently removed to their homes. Only Lt. Murray remains where he was originally laid to rest. The only Confederate soldier buried in the churchyard.
