COURSE SYLLABUS: CHEM 100B (Elementary Organic and Biological Chemistry)

UNITS: 5.0

PPREREQUISITES: CHEM 100A (Elementary Chemistry or equivalent)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A continuation of Chem 100A to include equilibrium, oxidation-reduction, simple electrochemistry, radioactivity. Major emphasis will be on organic chemistry. An introduction to the fundamentals of organic chemistry designed primarily for students who have not had any previous organic chemistry training. Organic topics are: nomenclature; structure and bonding; classification by functional groups and reactions; polymerization; optical isomerism; physical properties based on polarity. Biochemistry may include carbohydrates; proteins and amino acids; fats; enzymes; DNA and RNA; cell biochemistry. The course includes two 2-hours of lecture and one 3-hour laboratory each week. The laboratory will give concrete examples of lecture material.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

One grade will be assigned for CHEM 100B. The grade will include both lecture and lab work. If you fail either the lecture portion or the lab portion of the course, the highest grade you can earn in the course is a "D".

NO MAKE-UP labs are given. If you miss only one lab, that lab score will be recorded as zero and became you lowest grade which will be dropped. Make sure that you do not miss more than one lab.

NOTE: Your semester grade for Chem 100B will be based on 75% lecture grades and 25% lab grade. If a student fails either the lecture portion or the lab portion of the course, the highest grade a student can earn is a "D".
