Ellison Breakstone:
Josephine
was a school teacher in New York City. She married and lived in New York
until the time of her death.
Estelle
Melnick Cole:
Estelle
worked as a hospital volunteer in New York while taking courses in languages
and the arts. She used this to serve as an interpreter for her husband
while they travelled extensively around the world. They retired to later
Harrison, New York.
Fay
Chertkoff:
Fay
worked as a teacher throughout her full life. She wrote most of the Fraternity's
rituals. She served as a national officer for many years, including as
the first Grand Archon.
Gwen
Zaliels Snyder:
Gwen
graduated from Hunter College (of course) and taught school before marrying
and having one daughter. Later, she became a textile designer and branched
into interior designing for private homes.
Ethel
Gordon Kraus:
Ethel
married and had two children, one of them later became a member of Phi
Sigma Sigma. Her hobbies included bridge, theatre, and gardening. She remained
a member of the Godmother's League and the Hattie Bondy Scholarship Fund
until she died in 1984 in New York City.
Rose Sher Seidman: Rose
married and had two sons. Neither were Phi Sigs. She taught school from
1915 to 1917 and thenreturned to teaching in 1940 for ten more years. She
sponsored extracurricular activities to included social dance and puppetry.
Originally, she wanted to be an actress or a dancer but the profession
was not highly regarded. She travelled extensively throughout Europe, Iceland,
the Caribbean, and the United States. She died in 1987 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Jeanette
Lipka Furst: Jeanette graduated from public high school at age
11 and entered college at age 15 to become the youngest member of Phi Sigma
Sigma. She graduated from Hunter College in three years at the age of 18.
She taught the fifth grade after graduation and later earned her doctorate
in audio-visual education and communications.
Lillian
Gordon Alpern: Lillian Gordon Alpern was born in New York City,
the youngest child in a family of six. She followed in her only sister's
footsteps and attended Hunter College. While a junior in college, she met
and fell in love with Charles Alpern, whom she left school to marry. Lillian
was the first Founder to pass away in 1945.
