Summary of Hit Location Comments Made in 1998
In 1998, it was proposed that a hit location system be implemented.
This was to add some realism and flavour to the game.
In terms of realism, it was noted that several soldiers have come back from
wars with wounds to areas other than the main body or head. Thinking that
you usually want to kill somebody in a war, as oposed to just wounding them,
it was clear that such wounds were intended to be inflicted to a more vital
area (unless you are one of those few who think that the best way to kill a
man is to hit him in the foot).
In terms of flavour, it was noted that hardly anyone willingly gets a bionic
limb. This is despite the fact that many have lost limbs entering real life
battles. The reason being that bionics are sometimes not better than natural
attributes, and can sometimes hamper abilities. It was thought that if some
other part of the body was hit and destroyed, that bionics would have to be
used to replace the lost limb. This was clearly a part of the game that
was not being utilized.
A possible solution was a percentile based hit location for aimed shots:
01-15% left leg
16-30% right leg
31-40% left arm
41-50% right arm
51-97% main body
98-00% head
Clearly burst shots should not be allowed to use this table, because there
would be no way that a leg or arm could survive the blow if in normal body
armour. I think that the jury is still out on this one.
