The Jackal's View of Entertainment
Many forms of entertainment have ceased to exist since the coming of the
Rifts. For many people, just trying to stay alive is a 24 hour endeavor.
Between repairing equipment, gathering food, and defending yourself
against other-worldly creatures, entertainment is often not a high
priority.
In places where large groups of people can help and protect
each
other, however, there is often some form of leisure. Cards remains a
popular way to spend extra time (and in some cases to earn extra money).
Television is also available in some parts of the world. In the Coalition
States in particular, television is a useful tool for broadcasting
propaganda, censored news, and educational documentries on how to spot and
report dimensional beings and people with magic or psychic powers.
Even in smaller governments, TV is useful for keeping the public informed
and allows commercial institutions to market their goods.
Heck, even the internet is around in some forms. The Coalition, for example,
has a net that can be accessed from any city in the empire. Since,
most of the citizens are illiterate, however, it is little more than a toy
for most. In this respect, it is used to keep the people happy
and to show that they have a high quality of life. Compared to the rest
of the citizens, the Coalition military use their internet as a valuable
resource. With the net, they are able to monitor troops, accurately
gauge inventory, check on the progress of repairs, keep records, etc ...
Many other governments that have literate populations, use the internet
much as they did in the late 20th century. For them, they can access all
kinds of information, check the news, and order a much needed Norther Gun
blaster from the net. Linking nets together has been a slow process,
though. Especially true of paranoid governments, who think that the connection
might be used to spy on them. It is likely that these connections are closely
monitored.
Other than that, most entertainment forms that were available in the 20th
century are still around today in the more larger cities. From video games,
to movies, to theatre, to stand up comedy can be found here. In the smaller
towns and villages, however, better pack a deck of cards.
