Mike,

I just talked to a friend of mine over the weekend regarding the
maniac/furnace/en-kor combo. He then inquired to a rules guro, who said that the
combo works. From what I understand, here is why:

During damage resolution, each point of damage will have its own batch of
effects, as you have pointed out in previous emails. However, the creature does
not die until the end of the damage resolution phase, when it is determined
that he has received lethal damage, and is put into the graveyard. Thus, the
1 points of damage will accumulate on the Mog Maniac (doing damage to your
opponent each time a point is redirected to him), and the Mog Maniac will not
die until the end of the damage resolution phase.

This means that the combo is even more evil than I first suspected. First of
all, you can delay all your actions until the damage prevention phase (i.e. OK,
one of my creatures has taken damage, I will wait until the damage resolution
phase to deal with it instead of immediately responding). This means that once
the damage resolution phase has begun, your opponent can do absolutely nothing
to prevent the combo from taking its course (you cannot do anything during this
phase except damage prevention and redirection). The second part of this evil
combo is that a circle of protection doesn't do squat for you. This is because
that damage is being done each time a damage is redirected to him (i.e. I
redirect a damage to the mog, damage is dealt to my opponent, I redirect another
point of damage to him, damage is dealt, etc ...). In other
words, you would need an infinite amount of mana to prevent all the damage to
you from the mog.

The only thing that would screw it up would be cards like simulacrum where
all damage is redirected from you to one of your creatur ... hmmm ...

What do you think?
