Thanksgiving

I came back to Israel on the Monday night before Thanksgiving. My family doesn't really do much back home for Turkey Day, so I didn't feel I was missing anything. So, the invalid hobbled back over to the kibbutz on Tuesday, with his massive bags, after hitchhiking from Beit Sean with a guy on a donkey, and found his fellow Americans in a fevered frenzy.

"Hi guys."

"Michael! Welcome back!"

"Uhm, thanks. What's going on?"

"We're cooking for Thanksgiving."

"You're a little early here." I was quickly let in on this. The entire year, we Americans had been constantly told that there was no American culture. Now was the chance to show to people that we did have national culture. Only problem was that our graduation from Ulpan was on Thursday, so it all had to be done on Tuesday. OK. I helped as well as a jet lagged cripple could. They had bought a small turkey from Tirat Tzvi, we were making the stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, everything Thanksgiving.

Dinner time came, and of course, the food wasn't ready yet. Stall tactics. "OK, on Thanksgiving, we go around the table, and tell everybody what we're thankful for. I'm thankful to be back here amongst friends, and back away from my family." That got a laugh. But as it was passed around the table, I think the idea was misinterpreted, and they all were thankful to be in Israel on the program, and to be among friends. Didn't quite have the normal spice.

Before the food arrived, we did this skit explaining the holiday, written by Tali, one of the Americans, that was cornier than the cornbread we were missing. As I recall, I was the pilgrim...and my costume was comprised of a box painted black that would represent the pilgrims buckle hat.

After this skit which ended its brilliance, with me giving out micro machines, we ate. It was the first time that the Americans were complimented on anything American. It was probably the best Thanksgiving I had.
