QUESTIONS PAGES 509 - 514

1) The meaning of "nail" in line two of this poem refers to the fingernails of Dick's hand, which he is blowing on to keep warm. The word "saw" in line eleven is a colloquial term for the preacher's slow, boring sermon.

2) The owl's cry is not really a merry note. This adjective and the verb "sings" attempt to create a cheery Christmas spirit.

3) Unlike the other characters of the poem, the owl's cry is not due to his being sick or his work.
