Egypt consists mostly of the Nile Valley and desert plains. The land along the main river of Egypt, the Nile, is known as the Nile Valley. This land is fertile and the most agriculturally productive in the country. Over 95% of the entire population of the country lives along the Nile Valley.

The people throughout Egypt speak Arabic, the official language. Most of the people of Egypt are employed in agriculture, the textile industry, or light manufacturing. The chief products are textiles. Egypt exports many textiles, along with cement, iron, steel, chemicals, fertilizer, rubber products, refined sugar, tobacco, canned foods, cottonseed oil, small metal products, shoes and furniture. Egypt must import items as well. It imports electronics from the Far East and the U.S., automobiles from Japan and the U.S., and food from Israel, Europe, and Iraq.
Nearly 93% of Egyptians are Muslims. The largest minority religion is Coptic Christian. Other religious groups include Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Armenian, and a very small Jewish community. These minority religions exist only in urban areas. In the 1980's clashes occurred between the Muslims and Christian extremists.
