CHAPTER 9 DEFINITIONS

1) PRECEDENT An act that sets example for prostarity like GW's cabinet

2) BANK OF U.S. Concieved by Alexander Hamilton and established in 1791 used to hold the federal treasury and print money.

3) BILL OF RIGHTS First ten amenndments added to the constitution to appease additional states to join in the union.

4) JAY'S TREATY Treaty established by John Jay in 1783. America would pay its existing debts to England, who would stop taking our ships.

5) CONVENTION OF 1800 Signed in Paris during 1800, it ended America's protective alliance.

6) NEUTRALITY PROCLIMATION GW signed in 1793 warned Americans warned to not form a permanent allegiance with one country.

7) WHISKEY REBELLION Rebellion in 1794 where whiskey farmers had an uprising over a decision to put a tax on whiskey.

8) FEDERALISTS Those who supported the Constitution. Lead by Alexander Hamilton.

9) PICKNEY TREATY Spanish and US treaty in 1795; gave US free navigation of Mississippi.

10) BATTLE OF FALLEN TIMBERS Skirmish with Indians 8/20/1794 led by General Wayne. America pushed more Indians off their land.

11) VIRGINIA AND KENTUCK RESOLUTION Refusal of Virginia and Kentucky to participate in The Acts of Sedition. Led to judicial review.

12) JEFFERSONIAN REPUBLICANS Those who gave their political support behind Thomas Jefferson. Originally opposed constitution and opposed federalists.

13) ANTHONY WAYNE Led Americans in a great defeat of the northwest Indians at the Battle of Fallen Tmbers 8/20/1794.

14) JUDICIARY ACT OF 1794 Created a supreme court of five judges by congress to rule on federal laws.

15) X Y Z AFFAIR Scandel of John Adams that led to his disapproval from both parties. He decided not to pay a bribe to see the French Minister Talleyhand. Going to see Tallyhand, but not actually talking to him put Adams in a negative viewpoint from both parties.

16) TALLEYRAND French prime minister who needed the unpaid bribe to create the XYZ affair.

17) CITIZEN GE�ET Frenchmna who took advantage of the French-American treaty in Charleston to make money exporting

18) HENRY KNOX Secratery of war under GW. Fort named after him.

19) JOHN JAY Masterful negotiator created 3/5 compromise, Jay's treaty, Peace of Paris etc. and gave the young solid footing dealing with its eastern associates.
