My First Impression of My Hometown Beijing

This is my first time to go back since I left China in 1995. I left SF 3.24 and arrived in Beijing 3.25. I expected counter cultural shock, but there was none significant. As I was driven towards the center of the city, familiar street scenes came up and so my old memories. Actually the feeling was not much different from if I had been travelling in another American city. Of course, there are minor cultural shocks, such as there is no toilet paper in the public rest rooms, etc.

The first day in Beijing was windy and dusty. Actually the places that I had seen so far looked all like a construction site. I felt very depressed and even regretted coming back. If I had come back to get a feeling of my country, the initial feeling was not so nice. Dirt, dirt, everywhere. Moreover, Beijing is becoming an immigrant city. Walking into a shop or grocery store, you are greeted by immigrants from other provinces. I asked my little cousin where the Beijingers are: “;laid off and staying at home,”。;

As I rode aimlessly I followed the familiar streets I used to roam subconsciously, despite the many reconstructions on these streets. I passed the famous Liulichang Old Culture Street. When first constructed, it was so brilliant and beautiful, but now I was shocked to see only a whole bunch of gray buildings that appeared not old but worn out.

I never paid any attention to traffic rules before I left China in 1995, because I was one of the bikers who ignored them. Now I observe the street traffic and felt amused by the apparent disorder, except when I was caught shocked in the traffic.

The next day was better. I believe you feel better the longer you stay. It was less windy and there was the sun there. I went shopping for a jacket to replace the army water proof uniform that I had brought with me in case there was rain. I had it on the day before when I went to see a white collar friend in a company and felt extremely embarrassed. In Beijing, only manual laborers wear army jackets with camouflage color patches.

The prices of things gave me some shock but since we shopping in a big mall rented by private vendors, price hacking was easy, with the help of my cousin. The jacket went from 300 to 100 and my pants from 280 to 80. I wonder is there is any fair business rule.

Talking about immigrants, although they provides labor force for Beijing and promoted the economic development of the city, some also altered the good practices of some services. I had a haircut in a small barber shop near the Western Railway Station (BTW, the new station looked more like an imperial palace) run by Sichuan people. When I asked for the price, they told me it was five yuan. Then when I sat there, the girl began to "dry clean" my hair with a kind of chemical. It was too late to stop that and I asked if I would pay more for this. "fifteen altogether," was the answer. I was furious but could do nothing. I could not risk exposing my wet hair in the famous Beijing dust. After bargaining, it was settled at ten. After the hair cut, I asked for a mirror to examine the back of my head. "We had no mirrors," I insisted, saying that was the traditional practice of Beijing barbers. They took a large mirror from the wall and made the gesture of letting me look at my back. I did not fine any thing wrong at that hasty moment. Only later did I know how badly they had cut my hair.

Wuhan, via Zhengzhou

I left for Wuhan by train in the evening. Train service in China has greatly increased. Easier to get tickets. Trains are cleaner and there are non-smoking cars, though not all people follow the rule which is also not strictly enforced. In fast express trains, there are now electronic bulletin board to tell you the time, the velocity, etc about the train as it goes. I stopped in Zhengzhou for a few hours to visit a relative who was a professor in an institute. His housing condition has improved, bigger apartment (100 sq meters), face-lifted.

Now many Chinese have better living quarters. I began to wonder why I decided to leave my work place 6 years ago. But Zhengzhou was as third-world as it had been when I visited it years ago. There were sporadic new developments, but the whole city bore the same old flavor. The train station had been greatly improved though, internally, with better waiting rooms and WCs. Yet, given the equal dirt of Beijing and Zhengzhou, I like Zhengzhou better. I do not know why. Maybe it is because Zhengzhou is less pretentious and ambitious than Beijing is. It is developing for itself, not for winning the bid for the Olympics or whatever, and its development goes at its own pace. I believe that way, common peoples interests are better served.

I arrived at Wuhan in the evening. After a nights sleep, I woke up at 6 and went to the Jienfang Gongyuan (Liberation Park) to take photos of people doing morning exercises. My battery of the camcorder went out. I took only a few pictures. I was amazed by the large number of people trooping into the park before 7 (as the city governments order, all the parks in wuhan are free before 7 to allow citizens do morning exercises in them) and the many new kinds of activities there: Taichi, dancing, gymnastics if you can say so。 The first sentence that appeared in my mind was :" As commuters in the Silicon Valley was leaving home for their work in slow moving traffic on highway 101, people in a Chinese southern city are starting their work day in a fun way."

Three days in Wuhan and I got used to its choatic traffic and can ride my fathers ramshackle bike fearlessly on the forever bumpy roads that had ever been so since I was a child. Wuhan is a city that feels contented with herself, regardless of what people from other provinces say about it. When my train passes Xinyang, the train became almost empty, indicating that people in Hubei Province do not travel a lot as the Henan people do, especially north bound. Many travel to the south, down to Hunan and Guangdong. This might have something to do with language and culture. But on the whole, the Hubei people enjoy their life within their geographical boundary. They are good at eating and cooking, but who ever hears about famous Hubei cuisine in Beijing and in San Francisco?

Since I had no friends to contact in Wuhan, I spent much of my time shopping, not on a large and fanciful and luxurious scale, since I am never a big shopper and I cannot bring too much stuff back. I also took advantage of the freedom here to have my teeth cleaned in a nearby army hospital that is now open to the public and had a regular medical check there. The former cost me 80 and the latter 206, in RMB, much cheaper than in the U.S. ( $10 and $25 respectively).

Wuhan has rebuilt many parts of its downtown area and many constructions are still going on. Of course you see dirt a lot and the noise sometimes is unbearable, the honking of vehicles, the loud music from roadside stores, etc. The planned construction of the Wuhan Bund has not started it. A new suspense bridge has been built over the Hanshui, one of the tributaries of the Yangtze River. It looks like a giant orange-colored rainbow. Pity that there is no place along the Hanshui river where people can sit and enjoy the scenery over a cup of tea. Along the river are still the old docks that have walls separating pedestrians eyes from the river.

Internet bars are numerous and cheap, ranging from 1 to 2 yuan per hour, cheaper in the mornings and there is 5-6 yuan package price for overnight use. Many of them are tucked away among shabby looking restaurants and stores. The Wuhan people make no fuss about IT: it is just another convenience and a way to make money, like the many bank branches in the city.

With many shops and stores, Hankou has been the business center of Wuhan for hundreds of years. What I enjoy most is the electronics market on the back streets near Jianghanlu. It consists mainly of private vendors. Bargaining is a common practice, but some commodities also have problems.

Along the Zhongshan Road, there are many photo shops advertising service for wedding photos, showing that this business is booming. Often in the street you see a bride in white wedding gown walking into one of them. Yet I feel sorry for the reconstruction of Zhongshan Road and the vicinity. This area used to be the Zujie, the foreign leased zone and there used to be rows of buildings in European style. They should be kept and renovated. Now the new Wangfujing Shopping Center and the Jiali Plaza on the Zhongshan Road literally has made a big dent on it, the buildings being further away from the roadside.

Talking about culture shock, I do not feel much in Wuhan that is unique. No toilet paper, sometimes the harsh treatment of customers, crowded buses, poor traffic regulationsthese are part of my upbringing and I do not feel so foreign to them. What makes me uncomfortable actually is the friendly service in shops: once you walk into a shop you are approached by girls eager to get you buy stuff. You cannot take your time selecting your purchase. You feel being pressed and in the end you often flee without buying anything.

What impressed me here is that nowadays many people get their apartments by this or that means, expensive or on work units subsidies. Even the generation below me talk about buying apartments. Expensive interior decoration is now a common thing.

Yet despite the decoration, quite some households have problem keeping their apartments clean. This is especially so in the kitchen. The old Chinese way rules in this space. But of course, this is not universal phenomenon. Many people keep pets now, but some people treat pets as animals, rather than as family members. In Wuhan I have seen people walking their dogs in the streets, but some of the creatures are so dirty that I believe they are kept in a space separately from the human quarters. For one coming back from the States, this can be said to be a minor culture shock.

Luoyang

After some time in China, I was not surprised to find Luoyang much less developed than Beijing and Wuhan. The streets remain roughly the same, with more shops of course. On the whole, Luoyang remains what it was 10 years ago. The buses are dusty and worn out. The only new addition to them is a cash box that replaced the bus conductor. This means one person off job. The announcing device is loud and clear on trolley bus No. 2, but there is none on another route that later I took. The time I arrived was close to the yearly Peony Festival and I could see the Wangcheng Park being decorated. Peonies in front of my professors house were already fully in bloom though. We took some pictures in front of the plants when I left two days later.

I was in Luoyang to visit my school, to compensate for my absence from a class reunion two years ago. I stayed with my former teacher, a retired professor who had her education overseas and came back to serve New China in the fifties. She had spent her life time working in Luoyang. There are three other female professors like her in the institute. One, with her husband, was American and worked in the language lab most of the time. She also conducted speaking classes, since she spoke American English the native way. She feels more comfortable speaking English than speaking Chinese. When I went to see her this time, both she and her husband were in the old cotton padded jackets. "We just love it. It is not fashionable but very comfortable." Later at the family dumpling dinner at my hostesss house, she brought over a dessert American style banana and ice cream. One professor of Japanese returned from Japan and the one who taught Nepalese came from South Asia. A picture of the four dedicated female professors appears in the 50 year anniversary album of the school.

I was shown around by my classmate, now Chair of the English Department, who also showed me a business card of Mr. Butler, Asso. Provost of DLI, whom he had met in Australia at a conference. The institute has changed a lot since I left in 1990. The library has been augmented. There is a new faculty building and a new classroom building. In the faculty building, full titled professors who are qualified to supervise doctoral studies now have their own small but cozy offices. Two associate professors share one office. For young teachers, 4-5 share one office. A new research building is under construction day and night. A resort-like place is being built on the south side of the class room building. After completion, it will furnish wide walk-ways lined with benches that have ornamental metal backs, fountains, and a French arch that appear disproportionately small. The space will be lighted with powerful lights from one imposingly tall lamp pole that one usually see in large, spacious public places such as the Tiananmen Square or in a stadium. To me this add-on was too much for a school.

The old short wave receivers in the class rooms of the old days are now replaced with a computer and a TV that is hooked up to the institutes internal cable system. The cable could provide CNN, French TV-5 and other language programs in addition to the regular domestic channels. Access to foreign TV programs is still controlled in China, but the schools specialty overrode the political concerns of the city authorities. The facilities help teaching a lot, but the disuse of the radio receivers does not seem like a good idea to me, since audio signals are more difficult to process than audio signals combined with video signals. Radios have their own merits as language training tools.

The institute is now internet accessible, in the offices for faculty and officers and in the library for the students. I did not check if they can access English newspapers and radio stations. If yes, it will be easy for them to print up-to-date materials for students to read and to download programs of local stations in foreign countries. This means the end of the old days typing from subscribed foreign magazines and from recorded tapes of VOA. The speed is slow though.

Student life has changed from my days. The chow halls are now taken over by independent contractors and the students use a card for purchasing food. Sometimes boys run out of their account, and their female fellow students sometimes give part of their monthly ration to the boys. In the past, the foods were not very good, but everyone is guaranteed a fully stuffed stomach during each meal. Only when there was meat did this female-male student cooperation was necessary. I might be remembering wrong though.

The next morning after I arrived, I woke up early and went jogging, joining the many students who now wear fashionable and colorful sports jackets and pants. Although they have to buy them, the pants and jackets are of the same color and design, for the same unit at least.

Four new student dorms have been constructed. Students now can take a hot bath everyday in their dorm, without bothering to go to the institutes public bath house. I was told that no other college in China can meet this standard of living. Some teachers complained about this, asking if the school wanted to keep the students or the teachers, implying that the school was not doing well to improve the living environments of the teachers.

Teachers living conditions have greatly improved though. A new apartment building is being built and the apartments can be bought. Now when one faculty dies or leaves the school, he or she can get a large sum of housing subsidy. I visited the apartment of some former students who were employed by the school after graduation. They have bought their apartments or at least those apartments use rights and have redone the interior. Although not very spacious, those apartments can furnish a comfortable living environment for a family of three.

I was entertained twice at the Green Garden, the restaurant of the schools reception house, by my former classmates and former dorm neighbors. The restaurant was not there when I left. It now replaced the old dining hall of the reception house. The food was good and the small private dining room was luxuriously furnished with a large TV set, two armchairs and a coffee table. The school now has a Chinese as Foreign Language program (4 years) for international students, who mainly come from Asia and Europe.

The following day after my arrival, the weather changed. It was heavily dark and cloudy, suggestive of heavy rain and the temperature was down drastically. I visited the Shanghai Market Street and found it now a walking street much prettier than before. The neighboring streets however remained the same. I had no guts to visit other places in the city, because I had left my extra clothing at the railway station and I was feeling frozen.

My Luoyang visit is as interesting and exciting as my Wuhan visit is relaxing. When I arrived in Beijing after 2 days in Luoyang, I discovered that I had given Beijing too little time.
