Arsenal have at last signed a back up striker for Anelka and Bergkamp in the form of Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu.
Talks have been on and off for the last 6 months, with Kanu having allegely signed already at least 3 or 4 times!!!
Wenger noticed Kanu after the hunt for Kluivert failed when he ended up heaing for Barcalona instead of us to join the five other dutchmen at the Catalan club (now 8 with fellow Arsenal targets Ronald and Frank De Boer!!!)
Kanu was on the verge of signing a while ago, as part of a loan deal although, the Inter president pushed for a do or die signing deal. This pushed the clubs into further negotiations with the main topic being his health. Although only 22, he may have been a gamble as the defective heart may have limited his form and therefore contribution to the club, but after a stringent medical everything seems to have gone okay leading to Kanu putting pen to paper this afternoon in an undisclosed deal reported to be for 6 years.
At 22 Kanu is young but has plenty of experience both with Ajax and with the Nigerian national team who he captained in the '96 Olymics in Atlanta, although he suffered a setback with the heart when he moved to Inter Milan for 1.3m. His set back prevented him from seriously breaking into the 1st team side before they signed Ronaldo, meaning 4 top class strikers fighting for one spot!!! Hopefully, like Bergy, who also failed to impress in Italy, it'll all bloom for him over here!!!
Even after Wenger signed Kanu, we are still reported to be after another striker, namely Matt Janson, the 21 year old 5m rated Crystal Palace hitman. Newcastle are at the moments favourites although they are not prepared to come up with the amounted stated by his club. Hopefully this is where we come in!!!
