Most of us wanted Arsene to continue with this team, so we shouldn't now
knock him for doing so. For our basic second team to have beaten a Chelsea first team full of experienced internationals would have been the result of the century, but it wasn't to be, in fact they gave Wenger his worst defeat since his arrival!!! Our team consisted of only 2 recognised 1st team players, in Freddie and Bergy (who isn't at his best right now!!!)
Whilst Frank Lebeouf graciously (I have to admit,
which is more than Poyet did who was actually tackled) virtually admitted
it wasn't a penalty for the first goal and Bob Wilson and Robbie Earle
agreed that ref, Elleray was at fault because he was 30 yards behind the
play, I doubt that it would have had much effect on the eventual result
(although if they hadn't scored the penalty, who knows what would have
happened). Manninger was at fault for the second. I think he had a rather dodgy game all round basically!!!
After the first goal it seemed he went to pieces and that is the most worrying
aspect about this result, is that rather than give the players the
confidence that they are up to first class competition, such a
humiliation will leave Arsene with a job to rebuild their fragile
confidence, having to pick up the pieces.
