Late goal spoils Alex's fine performance

Alex Manninger cut a forlorn figure at Hillsborough on Saturday, picking the ball out of the net after Lee Briscoe's freak last minute goal.

But he had put in a performance which justifies his tag as a worthy successor to David Seaman.

It may be some time before he can claim the No.1 shirt, but his saves, particularly in the second half, were worthy of the long line of classy Arsenal goalkeepers.

His saves from Emerson Thome and Briscoe among others kept Arsenal in the game as they pushed forward in search of a winner.

He was well positioned for Wednesday's goal as well, protecting his near post and unable to do anything about the goal which beat him.

Wenger praised his performance. He said: "I think he did very well against Sheffield. I'll have to look at the video, but I think the guy took his chance very well for the goal.
"I have full confidence in Alex and I don't think there is a problem with him." Manninger is also on stand-by to make his Champions League debut on Wednesday in case Seaman fails to recover from a rib injury and Wenger added: "If Seaman is injured, Manninger will play."
