SeeD was an organization formed to remove the military domination which ruled the planet and restore a peaceful world. SeeD members were able to possess magical powers, but they had to train hard and pass a graduation exam at a Garden in order to be accepted. This was Squall's dream, among many others.
Edea, a powerful witch who was awakened from her long slumber, now threatens the peace that the SeeD members fought so hard to attain. She is evil and powerful, and is worshipped by some.
Meanwhile, affter passing the graduation exam, Squall is inducted into SeeD. He meets Rinoa at a ball, and later discovers that she is the leader of a rebel organization called the Forest Owls. The Forest Owls fight against the nation of Galbadia are helped by SeeD members, but are not sucessful in their battles.
After Squall meets Rinoa that night, he has a dream in which he is Laguna Loire, a Galbadian soldier. Laguna is a reluctant soldier who would much rather become a journalist. In the dream he is on a mission with Kiros and Ward. Galbadia, with the assistance of Edea, has taken over the Town of Dole and has declared war on the world.
SeeD suspects that Edea was involved in the recent Galbadian outbreaks, so Squall is sent to assinate her. Seifer Almasy, Squall's rival and enemy, has teamed up with Edea, which complicates Squall's mission greatly.
