| Sir Walter Raliegh was granted a patent on the land of Virginia by queen Elizabeth between 1584 and 1585. He sent several expeditions to both explore and make a settlement in the region. After trying for several years, Raleigh sold out his interests in the colony to Governor John White and Richard Hakluyt in 1589. | ||||
