| At the start of the war the Union Navy consisted of 90 vessels, about half of which were in operating condition, and of these 28 of which were on foreign station. Despite this, the Union had its maritime advantages, including the fact that most of the shipbuilding facilities were located in the north; this included naval yards in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, as well as Portsmouth New Hampshire, Sacketts Harbor Maine, and Mare Island California. There were also a number of private yards that immediately began building vessels and converting peacetime ships to war ships with the start of the conflict. |
