| While the English relations with the Native Americans in the Roanoke area began fairly well, they deteriorate rather quickly. this was due in large part to the behavior of the English. Following Greenville's burning of the village of Aquascogoc on July 15, 1858, because he thought that one of the natives had stole a silver chalice(Morison), Native American Relations began to deteriorate. This is important to consider in light of the fact that this happened only a few days after the arrival of the English, suggesting that their actions and long term plans in Virginia would have problems from the start. The Natives on the Island of Roanoke, beign hospitible, set up fish weirs for the English, as well as planting corn for them(Morison). However, the English for some unknown reason were unable to, or chose not to use these forms of help, and instead continued to subsist in large part off of the Native's own village crops and food supplies |

| This began to cause problems between the English and the increasingly angered Wingina tribe. By June 1586, chief Wingina was ready to attack the English settlement on the Island. Open warfare erupted , and when Sir Francis Drake arrived in mid-June, the settlers, being perpetually threatened by the Natives on the Island, sailed for England on his ships. Thus, the problems with Native relations caused the first settlement to end on June 18, 1586, approximately one year after it began. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
