Sir Richard Greenville
Sir Richard Greenville was sent to settle Virginia by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. He went with seven ships and a fair number of colonists. When Greenville left Plymouth for Virginia in 1585, settled Roanoke in July, and returned to England to resupply the colony shortly thereafter. This was necessary because upon arrival in Virginia the ship Tyger had run aground spoiling most of the provisions on board. Greenville returned to Roanoke the following year even though the colonists had gone back to England with Sir Francis Drake. He left soldiers there once again to maintain a settlement.
