An Artist's Depictions of Constantine

On this page I will Show some paintings that I have found on the web.  The artist of these paintings is unknown.  In each of the paintings the artist has painted some of the major points in Constatine's life.  There are about four pictures and I will post them all.   Also on the website I found these on there are some other paintings that deal with Christianity.  I will attach a link to the site at the bottom of this page.

This painting depicts the baptism of Constantine.  As I had said on the page about Constantine's life, he was not baptised until he was on his deathbed.  This was a common thing for the people of his time.  Another contributor to the fact of his late baptism is that he did not become a Christian until later on in his life.

The Battle Of Milvian Bridge:

Battle.jpg (149870 bytes)

This painting is a depiction of the battle that took place at Milvian Bridge.   The battle that took place here is the one in which Constantine's forces defeated Maxentius.  It was the night before this battle that Constantine had his vision.

Constantine's Vision:

Vision.jpg (122683 bytes)

This painting depicts the famous vision that Constantine had the night before the Battle of Milvian Bridge.  In this painting Constantine's troops are preparing for battle as he looks towards the sky and sees the Cross of Christ that shall be his sign.   Underneath the cross were the Latin words "In Hoc Signo Vinces" which can be translated as "In this sign, you will conquer".  It was this vision that led to Constantine's turn to Christianity as well as that of the entire Roman Empire.

Ceiling of Triumph:

Ceiling.jpg (151952 bytes)

This was a painting that was created to represent the triumph of Christianity over Paganism.
