The Story of the Triton

According to ancient Greek mythology, Triton was the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Triton was also the leader of the warriors of the sea, and many times in the myths, the warriors were also called Tritons, making the name plural. It was often told that Poseidon would call upon his team of Tritons to wage battle. Physically, the Triton has the upper body of a man and the lower body of a fish. He carries a strong trident (three-pronged spear) in one hand as a weapon, and in the oher hand he carries a twisted seashell which he used to command the waves of the ocean.

With its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and its origins in the Scripps Insitution of Oceanography nearby, it was fitting that the University formally adopted the Triton as its official mascot. Since then, the many athletic teams at UCSD have been recognized nationwide as strong, determined, and hard-working groups of individuals worthy of the Triton name.

Members of the UCSD Co-ed Spirit Squad are proud to have and will continue to show the true spirit and talent associated with the mighty sea warrior's mythical legacy.
