This is a service that allows for distributed discussion. Basically it is composed of thousands of groups of people who share ideas online. These newsgroups are organised by subject. Each newsgroup is run something like a bulletin board services, with people posting messages that everyone who subscribes to the group can read and respond to.
Some newsgroups conduct very professional and formal discussions of serious topics; others are linked online clubs of people with the same hobby or passions. There is a lot of enthusiasm, sharing valuable help and ideas and unexpected camaraderie. There's also a lot of confusion and controversy as well as confrontation.
Some newsgroups are moderated but most are un-moderated and people can and do write anything they like also there are some newsgroups which can be disturbing to some people and for this reason most providers recommend that you exercise caution in which newsgroups you subscribe to.
We are subscribing to newsgroups through our First Class email system and you can post messages by accessing your email. You will see the following icon on your desktop:
When you double click this icon your will see a number of folders, the ones with red flags containg unread postings.
To post a message to these newsgroups just treat it like a ordinary email message, but instead of a name you will see the title of the newsgroup in the To: box. Practice posting messages to these newsgroups.
You should have enough skills now to complete the first live assignment which will be used in your portfolio for assessment.
