ENTERING URLs

(Once you have read through this page, print it out for reference)

URL is the abreviation for Universal Resource Location.

What it simply means is that it is an address where a particular web document can be found.

(Click HERE for an explanation of how URLs are constructed.)

In the Location or Address box on your browser, enter the following URL:

http://www.scotland.net

This will take you to the Scotland on-line site containing links to all things Scottish.

Use the hyperlinks to go to Tartans. This will take you to a site where you can search and browse the official register of all known Tartans. You may even find a Tartan there linked with your own name.

Once you have browsed this area of the site use the Back button to go back to the main page and use the hyperlinked graphics to browse other areas of the site.

Print out anything you want to keep for reference.

Now enter the following URL:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk

Again use the hyperlinks (text and graphics) to move about the site and the Back and Forward buttons to return to previously visited areas.

Once you have moved through the site and printed out anything of interest to yourself, exit the browser software by clicking on File in the top left of your browser screen and choosing either Exit (Netscape) or Close (Explorer).

Close down your computer station in the correct order and switch it off.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Use the skills gained working through the previous sections to browse the internet. Make a note of URLs featured on the television or in books and magazines and visit the sites. Use the Back and Forward buttons and remember if you get lost click the Home button to go back to the Home Page.

Once you are comfortable browsing the internet you can go to the live assignments which will be used in your portfolio.
