A wish fulfilled
The phone should ring any minute now and Eva could hardly wait. It seems like every minute was an hour. Her fiancee, Adam, promised he would call with important news at one o'clock this afternoon. I bet he is going to put off our wedding date again, Eva thought. He is always travelling, and I better get him used to staying home. I don't want to spend evenings alone here in Manhattan while he is on the road every week. It is now nearly a half hour past one o'clock and Eva is anxious. He said he would call from Washington at one o'clock, she recalled with growing irritation. This man drives me wild. If I didn't love him so . . .
The phone finally rang at two o'clock. But it was her girlfriend and, no, she didn't want to chat a while. She wanted to hear Adam's excuse for being an hour late with his call. Eva usually vacuums the rug or straightens out her closet when she is upset about something. So for nearly two hours she cleaned the whole house and was still mad. He keeps putting off our wedding day, and he is always travelling. But at least he keeps his promise, at least before today he did.
While cleaning Eva seemed to constantly see things which reminded her of Adam. His ties on the towel rack, his razor in the soap dish. And soon her anger began to turn to concern. Maybe he is hurt. It is not like him to be three hours late with a call. Maybe I should catch an Express Train to Washington and find out what is happening. Maybe he met that old girlfriend of his who works at the Library of Congress. Maybe . . .
At last the phone rang. But is was Eva's girlfriend again and, no, she still didn't want to chat awhile. It was nearly four o'clock and Eva was about to call the airlines to see if there had been an accident.
Finally, the phone rang and Eva grabbed the receiver before the first ring was completed.
"Hello, Adam?"
"Hi, dear. Sure, it's me," Adam's calm and comforting tone assured her. "Sound's like you're out of breath. Been doing your aerobics, babe?"
"Why haven't you called! You promised to call at one o'clock from Washington, and it is four o'clock and I'm really mad."
"Oh, slow down, babe," Adam said in his unruffled voice. "It is one o'clock here in Seattle. I said Washington, sure, but I meant the state, not the Capital."
Eva was calming down as he spoke, and his beautiful voice made her realize she wanted to be with him now, at this moment. Why did they have to wait so long to get married, and why did he have to travel so much?
"Good news, babe," Adam said as if nothing else had been said before. "This was my last trip for the company. I'm assigned to the Manhattan office, and we can get married as soon as you want. How about that, babe?"
"How about tomorrow?" Eva cheerfully suggested. How I love this guy, even if he does forget sometimes which city he is in. I'm going to make him so glad to be home, he'll definitely never want to travel again, at least no without me by his side.
