Driver hits two pedestrians, then flees the scene

As of press time Tuesday night, police were still looking for a man responsible for a pedestrian hit and run on Walnut Avenue that sent two people to the hospital. 

Around 6:45 p.m., two people - reportedly a middle-aged man and a 50-year-old woman - were crossing Walnut Avenue at Third Street when they were struck by what witnesses described as a white, two-door 1991 Ford Festiva hatchback traveling southbound. 

The two victim were quickly taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico by First Responder paramedics. 

Chico State University student Amy Maggi, 20, was driving behind the suspect when the two pedestrians were hit. 

"He hit the man first, and he went over the top of the car, and then he ran over the woman," Maggi said. "He didn't come even remotely close to braking." 

Maggi said the man turned left on Fourth Street, right on Cedar Street, and left on Fifth Street, where she lost him when other cars separated him from her vision. 

Maggi said she didn't notice his license plate number. 

"I was so into following him, I couldn't tell what it was," Maggi said. 

According to police radio transmissions, the driver was last seen by witnesses going north on Ivy Street in a white car with a smashed front windshield. 

An Enloe nursing supervisor said the man appeared he would be treated and released, but the woman was in serious but stable condition.
