Back in my parents day, it was a great school for teachers to get their credentials, The generation X'ers think of it as a party school. Now, its a bit of both. Yeah, thats Chico State. Chico currently consumes a bit more than 1% of the nations alcohol and 2% of all the Coors Beer in the USA. Not bad for a school of 10,000 and a town of 30,000 farmers. The Safeway ( its a supermarket for those of you outside of California) on Nord St. sells the most alcohol out of all the Safeways in America. The average for all Chico State students is 16 beers a week. I guess we pride ourself in alcohol....I mean, the Sierra Nevada Brewery is here and they brew some pretty good beer there, and its a great place to eat might I add. This is a picture of the library. It's only 3 floors high and the basement is a bunch of computer stuff I think...I don't spend much time in it unless I need to get some hardcore studying done. Behind the photographer is the BMU (Bell Memorial Union) where the bookstore is and all that neato stuff. Academically, Chico is pretty average. The only excellent parts about it is that Chico has a good reputation for producing excellent teachers and the Journalism department: both the news media and Public Relations options. The Orion, Chico State's Newspaper is #1 college newspaper in the state of California (yes, we beat out Stanford) and has recieved the Pacemaker (a really nice award for top high school and college papers...While I was at Golden West, we recieved the Pacemaker twice. I think they give out a total of 7 Pacemakers a year) The Tehema Group, Chico States Public Relations Firm is pretty big and is of course, run by PR students. Oh, and the A.S. Corporation, it's this big multi-million dollar company the students run...like the bookstore, the food services ect. Other than that, Chico State is just another State University.
In 1887, General John Bidwell, pioneer, statesman, and founder of Chico, donated eight acres of cherry orchard and construction began on Chico State Normal School. The campus opened in 1889 with ninety students and five faculty members. The first class of teachers graduated in June 1891. The State Normal School became Chico State Teachers College in 1921. The legislature converted its teachers colleges to state colleges in 1935, and Chico State Teachers College became Chico State College. In 1972, the College became California State University, Chico. The campus proper is 119 acres. The University also manages 800 acres of farm land and 250 acres of range land. Well here are some nice little statistics I'm sure you'll like to look at.
Most of this information was borrowed from the Chico State Homepage. Some was acquired from classes and just general knowledge known by students.. most of which is probably false :)
